“Thinks he’s better than he is” – Brutal verdict on one Liverpool player after Fenerbahce loss

So many Liverpool players were poor in the 3-2 defeat away to Fenerbahce, but Dominik Szoboszlai was one who came in for a particular amount of criticism.

The Reds were woeful in the Champions League on Wednesday night, throwing away a 2-1 lead in the second half, and Andoni Iraola was clearly frustrated after the game:

“The main reason I can find to lose the game is we conceded [from] three set-pieces. It’s something that we were doing very well in the league, I think we were dealing [with it] quite well until today. We knew it was one of the strengths of Fenerbahce, but we concede from a free-kick, from a corner, even from the long throw at the end.

“They are goals that have hurt us because we have twice gone in front after having good moments, controlling the game, arriving. We found the goals. But after, we conceded in situations that we definitely should defend better.”

In truth, Trey Nyoni was arguably the only Liverpool player who could hold his head high, having scored his first Reds, as well as impressing in his all-round game.

The knives are out for Szoboszlai at the moment, however, with a respected source having this to say about him on X:

“Can we say something about Dominik Szoboszlai? He’s a really good player. He thinks he’s better than he is, and that affects his game. If he knew his level, he’d be a better player.”

Dominik Szoboszlai is becoming a problem for Liverpool

There is plenty of truth in this, with Szoboszlai a player who struts around like he’s Steven Gerrard, but rarely influencing matches in close to the same manner.

He is a match-winner on his day, and has an eye for spectacular, but he feels like a square peg in a round hole under Iraola, not flourishing in any specific position.

Szoboszlai is at his best as a No.8 in a 4-3-3 formation, as was the case under Arne Slot, but Iraola doesn’t play that system, so it is hard to see the best of him.

The Hungarian has had his whiny moments with Liverpool fans, too, and can feel like Bruno Fernandes at times, which is not a compliment, despite their clear ability.

As things stand, some wouldn’t be upset to see Szoboszlai leave Anfield at the end of the season, and he needs to improve his form drastically and show he can work under Iraola.
