Arizona Cardinals reserve quarterback Gardner Minshew II stole the show this starting quarterback Jacoby Brissett this past weekend in the teams' 33-30 victory over the Dallas Cowboys. Minshew’s magnificence propels him into the starting role as head coach Matt LaFleur aims to salvage the season in the very competitive NFC West.
Through 23 attempts this past Sunday, Minshew completed 17 passes, incurred no sacks allowed, and avoided turnovers. Compile those facts with his impressive three touchdown passes and it should be easy to see where Brissett's blemishes almost assures him a ticket to the bench. Minshew’s effectiveness deals moreover with his ability to commit to his reads quickly, get the ball out, and avoid being stagnant in the pocket. With Minshew's ability to limit negative plays late Sunday, the Cardinals were able to pull off an improbable miracle.
Reserve quarterback Carson Beck will greatly benefit from observing the teams quarterback carousel and interchangeably operate in practice until his number is called. Minshew has shown himself to be much more efficient than Brissett over his NFL career and LaFleur's initial trust in Brissett has faded quickly even after giving him multiple chances to get the ball rolling. A magnificent victory in Dallas is just step one, but if the Cardinals can continue their effectiveness running a balanced offensive attack, they will have a chance to be competitive as the season progresses. Especially considering the recent struggles of the Seattle Seahawks.
