Xabi Alonso gives his honest opinion on Roberto De Zerbi and Tottenham ahead of Chelsea clash

Xabi Alonso is looking forward to his first Chelsea vs Tottenham clash from the dugout at Stamford Bridge. Although Arsenal remain Spurs’ primary rivals, Chelsea and Tottenham matches have arguably been more exciting over the last decade or so.

Chelsea have dominated the rivalry in the Premier League era, but it has often been an entertaining contest between two quality teams. Alonso knows the Blues must not overlook Spurs this weekend, despite the league table suggesting an easy victory.

In his latest press conference, the Spaniard discussed Tottenham’s season and head coach Roberto De Zerbi. While he did not sound afraid of his opponents, Alonso seemed wary of a tougher task than many might expect.

What Xabi Alonso really thinks of Roberto De Zerbi and Tottenham

Xabi Alonso has faced Roberto De Zerbi only once before, when Real Madrid defeated Marseille 2-1 in the league phase of last season’s Champions League. However, the Chelsea boss is fully aware of De Zerbi’s style and influence on his Tottenham team, having successfully guided them to Premier League safety last season.

Alonso said: “He has very clear ideas. I think we’re seeing Tottenham follow up what they did last year in a difficult situation, but it’s still early days, so there are many things to play for this season. But [we know] much of his [framework] and the way he likes his teams to play; we will see tomorrow.”

TalkingPoints

Chelsea have been dominant against Tottenham for many years, but what does Xabi Alonso need to do to ensure this run keeps going? The Blues haven't lost to Tottenham since 2023 👀

Meanwhile, Alonso also suggested Tottenham are a better team than the Premier League table suggests. Spurs had put in some impressive performances, including a 1-1 draw at Old Trafford with 10 men, before beating Frank Lampard’s Coventry 3-1 on Monday.

“I’ve seen a good team even in bad results, so we’re expecting a tough game against good opposition who do many good things,” Alonso added. “We need to be prepared for what to do in different moments with the ball. It’s going to be game eight [in the Premier League this season], so it’s still early days for everything.”

Alonso’s approach is right, as Chelsea cannot afford to be complacent heading into this game. Having secured their first win of the season, Spurs will be confident they can get at least a point against an inconsistent Chelsea side at Stamford Bridge.

However, the Blues could exploit Spurs’ confidence by letting them dictate possession before hitting them on the counterattack. Chelsea’s front three of Joao Pedro, Morgan Rogers and Cole Palmer should have too much for Spurs on Saturday.
