Michael Carrick has 5 Man United players he MUST start in 'all or nothing' Aston Villa fixture

Michael Carrick was handed a lifeline on Tuesday night after Manchester United's thrilling 3-2 comeback victory over AS Roma in the Champions League

In the midst of filming Amazon Prime's 'All or Nothing' documentary, Michael Carrick faces his own Manchester United crossroads on Sunday. Since the crisis talks at Carrington, it has felt inevitable that Carrick's future would be decided by three matches against; Chelsea, Roma and Aston Villa.

The Chelsea game started well, albeit ended with a second half collapse, aided by Lisandro Martinez's reckless four minutes. Then, the first half against Roma looked to be adding another nail into his coffin. But a spirited performance, the likes of which we have not seen since last season, rescued not only three points but the United head coach.

Now, all eyes turn to the weekend and arguably Carrick's biggest game yet. It goes without saying that team selection is key for the United boss. And MEN Sport believes there are five players who Carrick has to start on Sunday, regardless of who is available.

Senne Lammens

This season has not been as good as the last one for Lammens. Then again, no United player has enjoyed much success this campaign. Lammens is by no means the biggest culprit for the Reds' tepid form and he is clearly the club's No.1.

In midweek, Lammens was not at fault for either goal. He was let down badly by his defence for the first and was always going to be second favourite for the penalty. He did produce a fine stop to deny Donyell Malen before half time though. Had that gone in, who knows what would have happened.

Lammens is clear of Karl Darlow and Tom Heaton, and must start against Villa.

Leny Yoro

While the team were cheered off the pitch on Tuesday, few would have been reserving their applause for the defence. They were all at sea in the first half and only looked stronger in the second because United turned on their attacking charm. But out of the back four, it is Yoro who deserved the most plaudits.

Starting at right-back, Yoro was the best of an underwhelming bunch. He made no considerable errors and produced an impressive last-ditch tackle to avoid an almost certain Roma goal.

On Sunday, United will be without Lisandro Martinez due to suspension. Carrick will hope Patrick Dorgu is fit enough to fill in at left-back, allowing Diogo Dalot to return to right-back.

Ayden Heaven struggled in midweek and perhaps needs a rest. So moving Yoro inside to play with Harry Maguire, or even Matthijs de Ligt, could be the best option for Carrick. Or Yoro may have to stick at right-back if Dorgu is not match fit. Either way, there is no scenario where the French international should not be starting.

Kobbie Mainoo

Every time he plays, Mainoo reminds everyone how disastrous it would have been had United lost him. He's comfortably United's best midfielder, regardless of who is available.

It was another mature performance from him against Roma and that's what United have been missing during his injury lay off. Carlos Baleba's injury looks serious and while we don't know for sure, he could be out for a while.

During Baleba's recovery, it will be imperative that Mainoo stays fit to keep United's midfield strong. Mainoo has the potential to be a leader in the dressing room for years to come.

Shea Lacey

Lacey needed to make a point off the bench against Roma and he certainly did that. Amad did well at Chelsea on Saturday, but he was not at the races in midweek. When the teenager replaced him, the whole stadium gained a boost.

He was direct, attack-minded and produced a wonderful assist for Matheus Cunha's winner. It is becoming impossible to overlook Lacey and, with his job on the line, Carrick may as well go for it and select United's most promising teenage star.

Matheus Cunha

Cunha has faced plenty of criticism this season, particularly when utilised up front. Leading the line has not worked for United as his desire to drop deep, left the Reds without a focal point.

When Bryan Mbeumo swapped with him for the second half, you would have been right to feel apprehensive. But Carrick's decision paid off.

Cunha took both his goals well and he avoided chasing the ball as United controlled possession. The trick will be for Cunha to resist falling into those bad habits again, because that display against Roma explained why Carrick persevered with the Brazilian in that role for so long.

The true test for this quintet and their teammates will be whether they can build on this second half performance and result, or if it was just a flash in the pan. Sunday is all or nothing for Carrick.
