SV Elversberg were no match for RB Leipzig this afternoon as Christoph Baumgartner scored one of three goals on his Bundesliga return from injury.
RB Leipzig showed the necessary class and quality to brush SV Elversberg aside on a 4-0 scoreline this afternoon. Martin Demichelis' side boasted eight wholesale changes from their last outing, but Tidiam Gomis, Christoph Baumgartner and Rômulo struck for victory.
With a vastly rotated team after their midweek loss to Real Madrid, Leipzig naturally made an unusually slow start on home soil. Elversberg were first to threaten when Lasse Günther's cross picked out Maurice Krattenmacher. Willi Orban positioned himself well to make a block.
Following another decent chance for the Saarland club -- this time Krattenmacher off target from a Lukas Petkov ball -- Leipzig started to threaten. Antonio Nusa attacked the left wing, weaved his way inside and curled a peach of a shot just past the far post.
Ultimately, it would go down as a rather dull half which ended with David Mokwa being kept out twice by Orjan Nyland and Orban before the break. Thankfully, however, the second-half would burst to life in a matter of minutes through Tidiam Gomis.
Nusa laid the groundwork with another mazy dribble before plating up for the Frenchman to convert. That preceded Jan Gyamerah going off with a suspected muscle injury with Luca Sirch taking his place, but Elversberg couldn't avail of their chances and would soon pay.
Caught out high up the field, Nusa's searching ball to substitute Rômulo enabled the Brazilian to shrug off Pinkert and blast a shot under the legs of Kristof. Still, the loudest roar of the afternoon arrived when Christoph Baumgartner made his long-awaited return.
The Austrian midfielder, forced to sit out the 2026 World Cup with injury, got his golden moment when heading in a Brajan Gruda ball. The icing was added in injury time when Rômulo sealed his brace in the 4-0 win after Abdul Kone's exquisite backheel assist.
