Ollie Gilligan continued a remarkable family tradition on Monday by becoming the fourth son of trainer Paul Gilligan to ride a winner for his father.

Gilligan, who celebrated his 19th birthday on Sunday, gave 16/1 shot Rockonfamouslee a fine ride to win the Electric Galway INH Flat Race at Galway.

The youngest of the Gilligan brothers got the better of none other than Patrick Mullins in a driving finish at his local track.

"I had four point-to-point winners previously, and this is a great buzz. He stuck his neck out, and the horse was good and tough," Ollie told IrishRacing.com.

"I'm based in Wexford with Sean and Donnchadh Doyle, so hopefully I'll give it a good go this season, although I've a long way to go to catch up to my older brothers (Danny and Jack)!"

Ollie's victory means that all four of Paul Gilligan's sons have now ridden winners for their father.

The eldest, Liam, was the first to achieve the feat when steering 5/1 shot Nellie Pledge to victory in a handicap chase at Navan in January 2019.

Jack was next to get in on the act, aged just 16, when partnering Shanwalla to victory in a bumper at Listowel in September 2019.

Cheltenham Festival-winning rider Danny followed suit in June 2024, riding Zeeband to victory at Bangor.

And now Ollie has completed the family set with a memorable Bank Holiday Monday success at Galway.

His proud father Paul said: "This means a lot, as my four boys have now all ridden winners for us. Liam is a big addition at home currently, and the other lads are riding on the track.

"For Ollie to ride his first winner in Galway, for a good local man, Peter Mulrooney, is a special day.

"We are training a long time, and I couldn't work without the four lads, along with my wife Natalie. They are just super, and I'm glad to have all of them being part of the business.

"We have our ups and downs, but if there are no rows, it means that it doesn't mean enough to people. They are committed and good at their jobs."
