A Premier League-winning footballer and much-loved pundit has joined Bollington United.

Specsavers' Best Worst Team is back for its fifth season, asking the question, can giving the country's worst football team the Premier League treatment turn their performances around on and off the pitch?

This season sees former England international and Manchester City legend Micah Richards join Bollington United Sunday Blues, who lost every game last season.

As assistant manager, Micah will dive into his little black book to bring in former internationals, specialists and big personalities to fix the team's biggest problems.

He said: "I'm back for another series of Specsavers' Best Worst Team. Last season I met all my targets. But this season, I've got a new team.

"With Bollington United finishing bottom of the league and losing every game last season, I've never seen a team that needs me more!

"They lost 31-1 in a game – I mean how does that even happen? But the spirit here is brilliant.

"Nobody's given up and everyone mucks in. My job is to get them off the bottom of the table, and if Goody can hit 40 goals, I'll happily pay up."

In the opening episode, They lost 31-1?! Micah Richards Becomes Assistant Manager of the Worst Football Team in the UK, Micah meets goalkeeper-turned-manager Darryll Joynes, the man in goal for Bollington's infamous 31-1 defeat.

Micah also sets the side a challenge, pledging £5,000 to striker Sam 'Goody' Goodwin if he scores 40 goals this season.

Bollington United chairman David Spruce said: "Bollington United has always been about more than results.

"It's about the town, the families who come down every week and the volunteers who keep the club going.

"To have our story told on this stage is something none of us ever expected, and we can't wait for people to see what we're made of."

Since launching, Specsavers' Best Worst Team has given elite level support to grassroots clubs including Brentwood's Warley FC, Welsh side Cwm Albion and Somerset's Tunley Athletic.

These teams have been supported by titans of sport such as Harry Redknapp and Gary Neville, darts sensation Luke Littler and England women's international Ella Toone.

A roster of elite guests also offered expert advice and training including the record-breaker for the most appearances in the Premier League, James Milner, and King of the Jungle and viral content creator, Angry Ginge.

Kim Bull, brand communications Lead at Specsavers, added: "The best thing about grassroots football is that it's gloriously unpredictable.

"It's full of characters, questionable decisions and moments that will have you wondering how on earth they happened. That's exactly why Bollington United are such a perfect fit for Specsavers' Best Worst Team.

"They may have one of the worst records in the country, but what they lack in results they make up for in resilience, spirit and sheer determination.

"They're the latest team to get the Premier League treatment, and we can't wait to see what unfolds. We're thrilled to have Micah back for another season as we follow every missed chance, near miss and moment of misfortune along the way.

"If previous seasons are anything to go by, there are plenty of surprises still to come."
