New Liverpool sporting director Julian Ward is facing some big contract decisions in the coming months, with GIVEMESPORT senior correspondent Ben Jacobs revealing a fresh update on their plan for Alexis Mac Allister.
Liverpool have had some big success in recent years after winning the Premier League title twice, as well as the Champions League, but the first signs of the club moving on from those eras came in the summer when Andy Robertson and Mohamed Salah both left Anfield.
Ahead of next summer, the Reds must decide whether they are going to extend the contracts of Virgil van Dijk and Alisson, whose deals expire at the end of the campaign.
Both players have been vital to the Merseyside outfit's success and would be big misses, but they are also two of the club's highest earners, and Ward and Andoni Iraola must discuss how much of a part they will actually play if they do stay beyond 2026-27.
Liverpool will also be desperate to tie Rio Ngumoha down to a new contract in the coming weeks and months, with the 18-year-old producing a coming of age performance in the 4-3 win against Villarreal in the Champions League this week.
The teenager was unplayable from an attacking point of view as he displayed his dribbling ability, and he has the quality to be a starter in the Reds' XI for many years to come.
Liverpool Contracts Expiring in 2027:
The midfield situation is even more interesting, with Liverpool already handing Ryan Gravenberch and Dominik Szoboszlai new long-term contracts in 2026.
Their midfield partner, Mac Allister, publicly revealed that he was 'sad' after being told by the club that they wouldn't be offering him a new deal back in the summer and, according to Jacobs, speaking on the latest episode of GMS' Market Madness podcast, their stance hasn't changed.
With Alexis Mac Allister, the aim is, as of now anyway, not to offer him a new deal. Mac Allister said he's disappointed in that, but Liverpool will be looking for at least one midfielder in 2027.
Mac Allister remains a key player for Liverpool, starting eight of their 11 matches this term.
Speaking on Market Madness, Jacobs also revealed three midfield targets Liverpool are looking at as they look to strengthen their midfield in 2027.
The Reds didn't replace Curtis Jones following his move to Inter Milan, and there are clearly doubts whether Mac Allister will still be a Liverpool player for the 2027-28 season.
It seems certain that one player will arrive at Anfield, with Jacobs suggesting the most likely midfield options as things stand.
He said: "We know they like Alex Scott, but Chelsea, for the winter market anyway, consider themselves to be the favourites.
You've got Lamine Camara, as I exclusively revealed, and Manu Kone, who also have fans within the Anfield hierarchy.
It had been revealed that clubs may have had to spend more than £100m to take Scott away from Bournemouth in January, but the south coast outfit's stance could potentially change following his recent injury. Liverpool also told Camara on deadline day that he was high on their list for 2027 if his move to Chelsea collapsed.
Ward and Iraola, who knows Scott well from his time in charge of the Cherries, must now decide which route they are going to go down.
Who got more assists?
Round 1 of 9
Scott offers the Premier League experience, but Kone has established himself as one of the best in his position in Serie A and for France, while Camara is one of the most highly-rated young central midfielders in Europe.
Meanwhile, what is clear is that, as things stand, Mac Allister's Liverpool career could be drawing to a close if he isn't to be offered a new contract.
