According to a report by FootballTransfers on Friday, October 23, 2026, Brazilian midfielder Bruno Guimarães has explained that his decision to join Arsenal was motivated by his desire for a new challenge, despite developing a strong connection with Newcastle United during his time at the club.
The 28-year-old midfielder departed St James’ Park in August after spending four and a half years with the Magpies. During his spell at Newcastle, he captained the team to their first major trophy in 70 years and played an important role in helping them qualify for the UEFA Champions League on two occasions.
Guimarães admitted that leaving Newcastle was an emotional decision, revealing that he struggled to hold back his tears when bidding farewell to his teammates.
“I really enjoyed my time at the club and the affection I had from the fans,” he told The Sun. “It was a tough decision for me and my family. But after nearly five years, I felt I needed a new challenge.”
The Brazilian international further explained that his close relationships with Newcastle manager Eddie Howe, the club’s owners and his fellow players made the departure even more difficult. Nevertheless, he believes he gave everything he could during his time with the club and remains proud of their collective achievements.
“I think I did what I could for the club,” he said. “We won a trophy after 70 years, reached the Champions League twice and got to two finals. I wish them all the best.”
Since moving to Arsenal, Guimarães has made an encouraging start to life in north London, registering two goals in his first 10 appearances for the Gunners. He also featured alongside Declan Rice and Martin Ødegaard in Arsenal’s 2-2 Champions League draw against Bayern Munich.
The midfielder has expressed satisfaction with his new surroundings and appears determined to make a positive impact at Arsenal. Having brought his successful Newcastle chapter to an end, Guimarães is now focused on contributing to his new team's ambitions and delivering his best performances under Mikel Arteta.
