Wayne Rooney claims three Man Utd signings are ‘not good enough

Wayne Rooney has expressed serious doubts about Manchester United’s attacking recruitment, arguing that Bryan Mbeumo, Matheus Cunha and Benjamin Sesko lack the quality needed to help the club progress to the next level.

The former United forward’s criticism comes amid a difficult start to the Premier League campaign, with the team sitting 16th after eight matches. Michael Carrick’s side have also endured an eight-game winless run across all competitions, increasing concerns about the club’s performances and long-term direction.

United’s problems continued last weekend when they suffered a disappointing 3-0 defeat to Bournemouth at Old Trafford. The result added to the pressure surrounding Carrick and raised further questions about whether the squad has enough quality and depth to compete consistently against leading opponents.

Rooney believes the club’s difficulties are partly linked to shortcomings in their recruitment during the summer transfer window. He argued that United failed to address important weaknesses, particularly in defence, leaving the squad short of reliable alternatives in several positions.

The former England captain highlighted the lack of adequate cover for Luke Shaw at left-back, questioning why the club had not secured another option in that position. He also raised concerns about the depth of United’s central defence, suggesting that Harry Maguire and Lisandro Martinez could face difficulties handling the demands of Champions League football.

According to Rooney, United should have invested in additional defenders to strengthen the squad, improve competition for starting places and provide greater flexibility throughout the season. He believes those omissions have contributed to the team’s current struggles and could continue to affect their ability to challenge for major honours.

Rooney was similarly unimpressed with United’s attacking additions. Despite the arrival of Mbeumo, Cunha and Sesko last summer, he does not consider the trio capable of leading the club back to the highest level of European football. While acknowledging that the forwards have shown promising moments, he questioned whether their overall quality was sufficient for United’s ambitions.

Speaking on Stick To United, Rooney said the club would be mistaken to believe its newly assembled forward line was strong enough to deliver the progress supporters expect. He also challenged the idea that the existing group could realistically take United back into the Champions League.

The former striker described the current squad as being far from championship-winning standard, underlining his belief that substantial improvements are still required. His comments point to concerns extending beyond individual performances to the broader structure and quality of the team.

Despite United’s poor results, Carrick is expected to remain in charge for Saturday’s Premier League fixture against Chelsea at Stamford Bridge. However, speculation over his future continues, with Eddie Howe and Julian Nagelsmann reportedly among the possible replacements if the club decides to make a managerial change. Antonio Conte and Unai Emery have also been linked with the position.

United’s immediate challenge is to arrest their poor run, but Rooney’s assessment suggests that improving results alone may not resolve the deeper questions surrounding recruitment, squad depth and the club’s ability to compete for major trophies.
