According to a report by Football London on Friday, October 30, 2026, Chelsea legend Cesar Azpilicueta believes the club should be targeting Champions League qualification under new manager Xabi Alonso, insisting that expectations at Stamford Bridge remain high despite their recent struggles.
The former Blues captain has backed Chelsea to secure a top-five finish in the Premier League, which could earn them a place in next season's Champions League.
Speaking to ITV Sport presenter Mark Pougatch, Azpilicueta was asked whether Chelsea supporters should expect the team to finish among the Champions League places this season.
The Spaniard responded confidently, pointing to the high standards traditionally expected at the west London club.
"For sure," Azpilicueta responded. "The expectations at Chelsea are always high. We are used to fighting for trophies and it’s true that, at the moment, being out of Europe hurts.
"But I’m sure everybody at the club, the players, the staff, are working hard to get back into Champions League football."
Azpilicueta understands the demands of competing at the highest level, having spent 11 years at Stamford Bridge. During his time with Chelsea, he won two Premier League titles, the Champions League and several other major trophies.
His comments come as Alonso continues his efforts to establish himself following his appointment as Chelsea manager.
The Spaniard has experienced mixed results during his opening months in charge, with impressive performances against Leeds United and Everton contrasting with disappointing defeats to Brentford, Arsenal and Tottenham Hotspur.
Chelsea currently occupy fifth place in the Premier League table, having collected 13 points from their opening eight matches.
However, their position is far from secure, with several clubs, including Brentford, Leeds United, Newcastle United and Aston Villa, also competing for places in the upper half of the standings.
The Blues have two important fixtures remaining before the November international break. They will host Manchester United on Saturday before travelling to face Sunderland.
The two matches could offer a clearer picture of whether Alonso's side can maintain their position among the Premier League's leading teams and continue their push for Champions League qualification.
