Barcelona have reportedly revived their interest in Inter Milan defender Alessandro Bastoni after failing to secure his services during the summer transfer window, with the Italian international remaining a leading target as Hansi Flick considers strengthening his defensive options.
According to journalist Sacha Tavolieri, the 27-year-old remains Barcelona’s preferred candidate for the position, and the Spanish champions have not abandoned their pursuit. Negotiations had reportedly progressed during the previous transfer window, but Flick eventually reconsidered the proposed move, causing the deal to collapse shortly before the deadline.
Despite that setback, Barcelona have maintained contact with Bastoni’s representatives and are examining whether an agreement could be reached in January. The defender is also believed to favour a move to Spain should he decide to end his spell at Inter, with Barcelona reportedly his preferred destination.
However, his commitment to Inter could complicate the situation. Bastoni previously agreed to a long-term contract arrangement that was expected to keep him at the Italian club until 2031 after deciding against pursuing a transfer during the summer. His representatives are also understood to be seeking assurances from Flick before considering another move.
Reports suggest the defender wants clarity about his expected position in the squad and the manager’s long-term sporting plans. Those concerns could influence his decision, particularly if Barcelona cannot guarantee him a prominent role. Discussions between the club and the player’s camp are expected to continue as both sides assess whether a mid-season transfer is realistic.
Inter, meanwhile, are determined to retain one of their most important defensive players. The Italian club reportedly wants Bastoni to remain at San Siro until his existing contract expires in 2028, despite his representatives showing limited enthusiasm for an extension proposal.
Inter are said to have offered improved terms in an attempt to secure his future, but the proposal has not satisfied the defender’s camp. Consequently, Barcelona would face difficult negotiations if it decides to formalise its interest.
The expected financial demands present another obstacle. Inter are reportedly prepared to request approximately €70 million before considering a sale, a figure that could place considerable pressure on Barcelona’s transfer budget.
To create room for another defensive signing, Barcelona are also considering Alejandro Balde’s future, with reports suggesting the left-back could be made available in January. A departure could help the club manage both its finances and squad structure while pursuing Bastoni.
Although several conditions must be resolved, Barcelona’s renewed interest and the defender’s reported preference for Spain have placed the potential transfer back on the agenda. Further discussions in the coming weeks should provide a clearer indication of whether the Catalan club can turn its long-standing interest into an agreement.
