According to a report by Chelsea Chronicles on Sunday, November 1, 2026, Chelsea's defensive problems remain a major concern for manager Xabi Alonso despite the Blues recording a 2-0 victory over Manchester United at Stamford Bridge.
Chelsea continue to struggle defensively, with Wesley Fofana's performances, repeated injury problems and the absence of an experienced leader at the back identified as key issues.
The victory over Manchester United gave Chelsea their second clean sheet in three Premier League matches, following a difficult spell during which they went nine months and 23 league games without keeping one.
Goalkeeper Mike Penders played an important role in securing the clean sheet, producing an excellent save in the second half to deny Bryan Mbeumo. The Belgian had also been in goal during Chelsea's previous clean sheet against Everton.
However, the latest result did little to disguise the team's defensive weaknesses. Manchester United created several chances before half-time, while Matheus Cunha also had a goal ruled out following a close decision.
Fofana came under particular scrutiny after losing possession and allowing Amad Diallo to threaten Chelsea's goal. The defender was also caught out during another United attack, raising further questions about his concentration and reliability.
His disciplinary record has added to the concerns surrounding his performances. According to the report, Fofana has received two red cards in 25 appearances and seven yellow cards in 14 matches.
Injuries have also made it difficult for Alonso to establish a consistent defensive partnership. Malo Gusto, Levi Colwill, Pep Chavarria, Maxence Lacroix, Aaron Anselmino and Reece James have all been unavailable at different stages of the campaign.
Lacroix's latest hamstring injury is particularly concerning, leaving Chelsea with fewer defensive options ahead of a demanding run of fixtures.
Although the club spent around £130 million on defensive reinforcements during the summer, the report suggests that further additions may still be required.
Chelsea are expected to consider bringing in an experienced centre-back during the January transfer window, with the lack of a commanding defensive figure regarded as one of the team's major weaknesses.
Despite the positive result against Manchester United, Chelsea's hopes of maintaining a consistent challenge will depend on improving their defensive organisation and achieving greater stability at the back.
