According to a report by Barca Universal on Friday, October 23, 2026, Liverpool are reportedly increasingly likely to sign Ronald Araujo permanently from Barcelona if the Uruguayan defender continues his impressive performances during his season-long loan spell at Anfield under manager Andoni Iraola.
The agreement reportedly includes a €55 million purchase option, allowing Liverpool to secure the defender’s services permanently next summer if he convinces the club’s decision-makers with his performances.
Araujo has adapted quickly to English football, strengthening the possibility of remaining at Liverpool beyond his current loan spell. His versatility and consistent contributions have reportedly impressed the coaching staff.
The Barcelona defender has made an encouraging start under Iraola after being deployed at right-back rather than his preferred centre-back position, demonstrating his ability to handle different defensive responsibilities.
His physical strength, defensive aggression and attacking contributions have helped him settle into the unfamiliar role. He also scored during Liverpool’s recent Champions League victory over Villarreal.
Iraola has praised Araujo’s experience and versatility, highlighting the importance of having a defender capable of operating in different positions throughout a demanding campaign.
“Ronald needed this change and has arrived with humility. He is an experienced player from a big club who is ready to play in different positions,” the Liverpool manager said.
Araujo’s adaptability could become a decisive factor when Liverpool consider whether to activate the €55 million purchase option included in their agreement with Barcelona next summer.
The defender has also expressed satisfaction with his new surroundings after struggling to secure regular playing time at Barcelona. His spell at Liverpool has provided him with more opportunities to demonstrate his abilities consistently.
“I think I am finding what I needed here, which was to play, feel important and show my football. It is very early to talk about these things,” Araujo explained.
He added that securing regular minutes was his priority, suggesting he intends to focus on his performances before making any decisions about his long-term future.
Liverpool are expected to continue assessing his consistency throughout the season before committing to the substantial transfer fee. His adaptability and defensive contributions could play a significant role in the club’s final decision.
Barcelona could receive €55 million if Liverpool activate the purchase option, potentially providing the Catalan club with funds to strengthen their defence next summer and explore additional recruitment opportunities.
The Spanish giants could consider reinvesting the money in an experienced defender to complement their relatively young back line. However, Liverpool’s decision is expected to depend on Araujo’s performances and his overall value to the team.
