According to a report by FootballTransfers on Saturday, October 31, 2026, Manchester United have faced criticism over their decision to restore Bruno Fernandes to the starting line up for their Premier League encounter against Chelsea, with questions raised about the club's ability to maintain discipline and enforce standards among its senior players.
The FootballTransfers chief editor Robin Bairner argued that the decision to bring Fernandes straight back into the team demonstrated how much Manchester United's authority and internal discipline had deteriorated.
The Portuguese midfielder was named captain and included in Michael Carrick's starting XI for the meeting with Chelsea at Stamford Bridge, just days after being dropped from the squad that suffered a disappointing 3-0 home defeat against Bournemouth.
Fernandes had come under scrutiny following Manchester United's 4-1 Champions League defeat to Como in Italy. After that match, the midfielder questioned the team's approach and suggested that the players were simply following instructions from their manager.
His subsequent omission from the Bournemouth fixture was widely viewed as a disciplinary measure, particularly after supporters applauded Carrick while directing boos towards the players following the final whistle.
However, his immediate return to the starting line-up against Chelsea has raised questions about whether Manchester United are capable of holding their senior players accountable when disagreements arise.
Bairner suggested that Fernandes should have been required to publicly explain his controversial comments before being welcomed back into the team.
The criticism also brought attention to former Manchester United captain Roy Keane's previous assessment of the Portuguese international.
"Bruno is a talented player but it is not enough," Keane once said, highlighting concerns about whether technical ability alone is sufficient to meet the expectations associated with representing the club.
Bairner's criticism was not limited to Fernandes, as he also questioned the inclusion of Lisandro Martinez in the squad despite the defender previously expressing concerns about Manchester United's transfer policy.
The journalist argued that the club's apparent inability to establish consistent standards among its senior players reflected deeper leadership problems at Old Trafford.
He also questioned the influence of senior club officials Jason Wilcox and Omar Berrada in the decision to restore Fernandes, although there has been no confirmation that either executive intervened in Carrick's selection decision.
Manchester United have endured a difficult beginning to the 2026/27 campaign, with disappointing results increasing pressure on Carrick, the players and the club's leadership.
The latest controversy has therefore added another layer of uncertainty surrounding the club's dressing room discipline and its efforts to restore the standards expected at Old Trafford.
