According to a report by FootballTransfers on Saturday, October 31, 2026, Michael Carrick could leave Manchester United with a compensation package of around £5 million after the club reportedly inserted a break clause into his contract, despite deciding to keep him in charge for their Premier League meeting with Chelsea.
United have opted against dismissing Carrick immediately, although his position remains uncertain following a disappointing series of results.
The manager appeared to be heading towards the exit after Manchester United suffered a 3-0 defeat to Bournemouth at Old Trafford. However, the reaction from supporters suggested that he still enjoys considerable backing among sections of the fanbase.
While Carrick received cheers from some home supporters as he walked off the pitch, the players were heavily booed following another disappointing performance.
Former Newcastle United manager Eddie Howe had reportedly emerged as one of the leading candidates to replace Carrick, making United's decision to retain their current manager somewhat surprising.
However, financial concerns may not be a major obstacle if the club decides to make a change.
Speaking to the United Stand, journalist Ben Jacobs revealed that Carrick's contract includes a break clause that would allow United to end his appointment by paying him the remainder of his season's salary.
"Michael Carrick has a break clause, so if they part ways he’ll be paid out for the season and that’s it."
With Carrick reportedly earning around £5 million per season, United could avoid a much larger compensation bill if they decide to part ways with him.
Jacobs also explained that Carrick remains under pressure, with the upcoming fixtures potentially determining whether he continues at Old Trafford.
"Michael Carrick remains under pressure," he said. "He’s got Chelsea. If he can get a positive result there, the expectation is that he’ll get Roma and Aston Villa, and then there’s an international break."
Several other managerial options have also been discussed internally, with Howe reportedly ahead of Julian Nagelsmann in the club's current thinking.
"There is Julian Nagelsmann, who’s behind Howe at the moment in terms of internal thinking if they do make a change."
Jacobs further revealed that Antonio Conte, Cesc Fabregas, Unai Emery and Fabian Hurzeler are among the other managers whose names have been discussed as potential replacements.
