Barcelona could consider academy midfielder Brian Farinas as an emergency option at right-back following Xavi Espart’s injury, with manager Hansi Flick assessing possible solutions to the club’s defensive shortage.
Espart is reportedly expected to miss around seven weeks, leaving Barcelona with another concern in a position where several players are dealing with fitness issues. Eric Garcia is continuing his recovery from injury, while Jules Kounde is working towards a return. The situation could force Flick to explore alternatives as he attempts to maintain stability in his defensive line.
Farinas has emerged as a potential candidate after reportedly impressing the German coach during Barcelona’s pre-season preparations. Although the 18-year-old primarily plays in midfield, Flick has already experimented with him at right-back, suggesting the youngster could provide useful cover if required.
The academy prospect joined Barcelona’s La Masia youth system in 2018 and has progressed through the club’s development structure. His performances for Barça Atletic last season further enhanced his reputation and helped him attract attention from the senior coaching staff.
Flick assessed Farinas in several positions during pre-season as he looked to understand how the midfielder could contribute to the first team. One of his notable opportunities came during Barcelona’s friendly against Birmingham City on July 31, when he was introduced at right-back in place of Espart.
Farinas played the final 28 minutes of that match and reportedly impressed with his positioning and ability to adapt to an unfamiliar role. His performance provided Flick with an opportunity to evaluate whether the teenager could offer a temporary solution when the team faces a shortage of recognised defenders.
The youngster also featured in his natural midfield position during other pre-season fixtures. These included matches against Nottingham Forest and Udinese, as well as Barcelona’s Joan Gamper Trophy meeting with Al-Ahli. Across five friendly matches, Farinas accumulated 198 minutes of playing time.
His involvement throughout the preparations allowed the coaching staff to assess his development and versatility. While midfield remains his primary position, his experience at right-back could become particularly valuable given Barcelona’s current injury concerns.
Flick has previously spoken positively about Farinas, describing him as an excellent and highly talented player ahead of Barcelona’s La Liga fixture against Rayo Vallecano. The praise suggests that the manager has been monitoring the youngster’s progress and recognises his potential.
Despite those encouraging signs, Farinas has yet to make his competitive first-team debut for Barcelona. The competition for places in midfield has also complicated his chances of securing a regular role, with established players ahead of him in the pecking order.
Espart’s absence could now provide a different opportunity for the teenager to move closer to senior football. If Flick decides to use him at right-back, Farinas could earn valuable first-team experience while helping the club navigate its defensive difficulties.
However, no decision has been confirmed, and it remains unclear whether the coach will select him for a competitive match in the unfamiliar position. Barcelona will continue assessing their available options as Garcia and Kounde work through their respective fitness situations.
With Espart expected to be sidelined for several weeks, Farinas could become an unexpected option if additional cover is needed. His versatility and familiarity with Flick’s system may strengthen his chances, although his eventual involvement will depend on the manager’s assessment of the team’s defensive requirements.
