Ghanaian sports journalist Michael Oti Adjei, who served as Ghana’s representative on the Ballon d’Or jury, has explained that he did not consider Spanish football sensation Lamine Yamal the best player in the world.
Oti Adjei made his position clear in a statement that has drawn attention to the discussions surrounding the evaluation of the Barcelona youngster’s performances and his standing among the world’s top footballers.
Yamal has established himself as one of football’s most exciting young talents, earning widespread recognition for his technical ability, creativity, confidence and influence on the pitch. His impressive performances for Barcelona and the Spanish national team have also placed him among the leading names in conversations about football’s brightest stars.
However, Oti Adjei’s remarks suggest that Yamal’s remarkable potential and achievements were not enough to convince him that the teenager deserved the top position in his assessment of the world’s best player.
As a member of the Ballon d’Or jury, the Ghanaian journalist was among those entrusted with evaluating players based on their performances and contributions to the game. His comments have therefore added another perspective to the ongoing debate over how football’s biggest individual honours should be decided.
Although Yamal continues to attract praise from supporters and football observers around the world, opinions on who deserves to be recognised as the best player can differ depending on individual assessments and voting criteria.
Oti Adjei’s statement highlights the subjective nature of football awards, where even players enjoying outstanding seasons may not receive the same level of recognition from every voter.
His position is likely to generate further discussion among football fans, particularly those who believe Yamal has already demonstrated the qualities required to compete for the sport’s highest individual honours.
