Man Utd Set Up Dream Barcelona Swap That Solves Two Major Problems

According to a report by FootballTransfers on Monday, November 2, 2026, Manchester United are reportedly considering a deal with Barcelona that could see left-back Alejandro Balde move to Old Trafford, with Lisandro Martinez potentially joining the Spanish club in January.

Michael Carrick's side are looking to strengthen two key areas of their squad through a possible arrangement involving the Barcelona defender and the Argentine centre-back.

United's need for defensive reinforcements has become more obvious following their disappointing start to the Premier League season.

Their 2-0 defeat to Chelsea at Stamford Bridge left them with seven points, keeping them outside the relegation zone only on goal difference.

The result also increased uncertainty surrounding Martinez's future after he was sent off during the encounter. His recent performances and reported criticism of the club's board have further raised questions about his position at Old Trafford.

Barcelona are reportedly interested in bringing the 28-year-old back to Spain as they seek to strengthen their central defence.

Meanwhile, United have identified Balde as a possible answer to their problems at left-back. The 23-year-old has struggled to secure regular playing time at Barcelona this season, making only four appearances.

The Spain international has fallen behind other options in the pecking order, with Joao Cancelo also preferred in the position. His limited opportunities have reportedly made him available for a possible January exit.

United previously showed interest in Balde during the summer transfer window and could now revive their pursuit as they look to provide competition for Luke Shaw, who is currently injured.

Barcelona's financial situation could also play an important role in any potential negotiations. The Catalan club are looking to raise funds before making further additions to their squad, particularly as they target a new central defender.

The club's financial vice-president, Ferran Olive, recently explained the limitations affecting their transfer plans, saying: "We have to sell in order to sign players. The '1:1' rule means that for one player to come in, another needs to leave."

Although the proposal has been described as a swap deal, it would likely involve two separate transfers, giving both clubs greater flexibility in managing the financial arrangements.

Several agreements would still be required before the proposed deal could happen. However, the arrangement could offer both Manchester United and Barcelona an opportunity to address important defensive weaknesses ahead of the second half of the season.
