Hansi Flick’s Defensive Gamble Pays Off as Midfield Duo Shine in Unfamiliar Roles

Hansi Flick’s decision to use Frenkie de Jong as a centre-back and Brian Farinas at right-back proved successful as both players delivered impressive performances in Barcelona’s victory over Deportivo Alaves. According to Barca Universal on Sunday, November 1, 2026, the German manager’s tactical adjustments helped his side overcome a shortage of defensive options caused by several injuries.

Barcelona approached the fixture looking to respond after consecutive defeats against Paris Saint-Germain and Real Madrid. However, Flick had only four senior defenders available, leaving him with limited choices when selecting his backline. Mundo Deportivo reported that the coach addressed the situation by moving De Jong and Farinas into unfamiliar defensive roles.

De Jong partnered Pau Cubarsi in central defence despite having limited competitive minutes since returning from a knee injury sustained during the World Cup. The Dutch international was not entirely unfamiliar with the position, having previously operated as a defender for Ajax, Barcelona and the Netherlands national team.

Although his match fitness remained a concern, the 29-year-old adapted comfortably to the responsibility against Alaves. His confidence on the ball helped Barcelona build attacks from deep, while his awareness and positioning enabled him to deal with several defensive situations. Aside from an early physical encounter, De Jong produced a composed and convincing display.

Farinas also made a positive impression during his official first-team debut. The La Masia graduate was handed an opportunity at right-back, even though the position had not been a regular feature of his development in the academy. Nevertheless, he showed considerable confidence and remained on the pitch for the full 90 minutes.

One of the most encouraging aspects of his performance was the understanding he developed with Lamine Yamal on the right flank. The pair combined effectively, with Farinas showing an ability to support the winger and contribute to Barcelona’s attacking movements.

His creativity was particularly evident when he produced an impressive backheel pass to create an opportunity for Yamal. Although the move did not result in a goal, it demonstrated the youngster’s technical ability and willingness to contribute beyond his defensive responsibilities.

Flick’s willingness to trust both players in unfamiliar positions proved valuable at a time when injuries had restricted his selection options. Rather than relying exclusively on the available senior defenders, he gave two players the opportunity to demonstrate their versatility and readiness to contribute.

Their performances could provide Barcelona with greater flexibility as the team prepares for upcoming fixtures against Aston Villa and Atletico Madrid. De Jong’s experience and Farinas’ encouraging debut have given Flick additional possibilities when managing his defensive lineup.

However, maintaining the same standard against stronger opponents will present a different challenge. Their displays against Alaves were encouraging, but further performances will be needed to establish whether both players can consistently handle their new responsibilities.
