Chelsea defender Opens Up On ‘Horrible’ Chelsea Spell After January Recall

Chelsea defender Mamadou Sarr has opened up about the emotional and professional difficulties he experienced during his brief return to Stamford Bridge after being recalled from Strasbourg midway through last season. According to a report by The Athletic on Thursday, November 5, 2026, the 21-year-old described his time with the Blues as a “rollercoaster”, explaining how losing his place in the team without receiving clear communication affected him.

Chelsea signed Sarr from Strasbourg in 2025 before allowing him to return to the French club on loan for the first half of the 2025/26 campaign. The arrangement proved beneficial for the young centre-back, who developed considerably under manager Liam Rosenior.

During his time in Ligue 1, Sarr regularly captained Strasbourg and produced performances that strengthened his reputation. His progress also coincided with his international breakthrough after deciding to represent Senegal instead of France.

However, Rosenior’s appointment as Chelsea manager in January 2026 changed the direction of Sarr’s season. The new coach requested his return to Stamford Bridge before the agreed loan period had ended, creating an opportunity for the defender to establish himself in Chelsea’s first team.

Sarr initially appeared among the substitutes for the club’s opening two Premier League fixtures. He subsequently made his debut in a 4-0 FA Cup victory over Hull City on February 13 and also started against Wrexham in the competition.

Despite receiving those opportunities, the Senegalese defender struggled to secure a regular position. He started only one of Chelsea’s 14 Premier League matches during his spell with the senior team, leaving him with limited opportunities to demonstrate his abilities.

His difficulties were further highlighted during a Champions League meeting with Paris Saint-Germain. Sarr lost possession in the sixth minute, allowing Khvicha Kvaratskhelia to capitalise and score. The mistake attracted criticism and contributed to an increasingly frustrating period for the youngster.

His involvement subsequently declined, and the situation did not improve following Rosenior’s departure. Interim manager Calum McFarlane also omitted him from several matchday squads, leaving the defender uncertain about his role and future at the club.

Speaking to French newspaper L’Équipe, Sarr described the experience as extremely challenging. He explained that he had returned from the Africa Cup of Nations feeling confident after enjoying a positive period of football. He initially made encouraging appearances, but the mistake against PSG quickly changed the situation.

Sarr said the criticism during the following week was particularly difficult to handle. He was also disappointed by the lack of communication from the club, especially after Rosenior, the manager who had brought him back to Chelsea, was dismissed.

The defender admitted that remaining on the bench while watching his teammates play was difficult, particularly because nobody explained why his opportunities had disappeared. He had also expected to feature at the World Cup but felt his lack of match fitness and rhythm affected his chances.

Sarr has since joined Real Sociedad on a season-long loan, giving him an opportunity to rebuild his confidence, regain regular playing time and restore the momentum he enjoyed during his previous spell in France.
