According to a report by FootballTransfers on Friday, October 23, 2026, Bruno Guimaraes has revealed why he chose to leave Newcastle United for Arsenal during the summer transfer window, admitting that he needed a new challenge after spending nearly five years at St James’ Park.
The Brazil international decided to join Mikel Arteta’s side despite his strong emotional attachment to Newcastle and the success he enjoyed during his time at the club.
The 28-year-old completed a reported €87.5 million move to Arsenal in August, ending a successful spell in which he helped Newcastle win their first major trophy in 70 years and secure Champions League qualification on two occasions.
His departure disappointed Newcastle supporters, who had hoped their captain would remain at the club after repeatedly expressing his affection for the fans.
However, Guimaraes has explained that the opportunity to experience a different environment ultimately influenced his decision to leave.
"I remember, when I said bye to the lads, I was crying. They were crying as well, because we were a family there," Guimaraes told The Sun.
He added: "But sometimes in your life you have to make decisions and, for me, I was at the club for nearly five years and in my mind I needed a new challenge."
The midfielder admitted that leaving Newcastle was particularly difficult because of the strong relationships he had developed with the players, coaching staff and supporters.
"I had an amazing relationship with everyone at Newcastle. I never felt so loved like the way I was at Newcastle," he said.
Despite the emotional nature of his departure, Guimaraes believes he gave his best for Newcastle and helped the club achieve significant milestones during his time on Tyneside.
He pointed to the club’s trophy success, two Champions League qualifications and appearances in two finals as evidence of the progress made during his spell.
"I think I did great for Newcastle. We won a trophy after 70 years. We got into the Champions League twice. We got to two finals. I think I did what I could for the club," he added.
Guimaraes has made an encouraging start to life at Arsenal, scoring twice in 10 appearances, including the winning goal against Leeds United earlier this month.
He also started alongside Declan Rice and Martin Odegaard in Arsenal’s 2-2 Champions League draw against Bayern Munich on Wednesday.
