Xabi Alonso Reveals Half-Time Message That Inspired Chelsea's 2-0 Win Over Man Utd

Chelsea manager Xabi Alonso has explained how his half-time instructions helped transform his side’s performance during their 2-0 Premier League victory over Manchester United at Stamford Bridge.

According to Football London, in a report published on October 31, 2026, the Spanish coach encouraged his players to dominate possession more effectively and maintain greater stability after a closely contested opening 45 minutes.

Manchester United had created some of the more promising opportunities before the interval, while Chelsea struggled to establish consistent control of the game. Both sides looked dangerous when launching counter-attacks, making the first half an evenly balanced contest.

However, Chelsea returned from the break with improved intensity and a clearer approach. Their response produced an early breakthrough when Morgan Rogers scored five minutes into the second half, giving the hosts the advantage.

The Blues later strengthened their position in the 64th minute when Cole Palmer converted a penalty. The spot-kick followed Lisandro Martinez’s dismissal for bringing down Wesley Fofana, leaving Manchester United with ten players for the remainder of the encounter.

Speaking to TNT Sports after the final whistle, Alonso explained that his half-time conversation with the squad focused primarily on controlling the ball. He acknowledged that both teams had created opportunities in the first half but believed Chelsea could secure victory by improving their possession and composure.

The former Real Madrid manager described the performance as mature, praising his players for understanding and implementing the tactical adjustments after the restart. He also singled out the opening stages of the second half as a significant improvement compared with their display before the break.

Alonso noted that the dismissal and Chelsea’s subsequent two-goal advantage changed the circumstances of the match. Nevertheless, he was pleased with how his team managed the different phases of the contest and maintained its organisation.

The manager also clarified that his adjustments were not complicated. His main objective was to ensure that Chelsea became more comfortable in possession while avoiding unnecessary instability. He credited the improved start after half-time for creating the conditions that allowed Rogers to score the opening goal.

The match statistics reflected Chelsea’s greater control as the contest progressed. Alonso’s side finished with 59 per cent possession and completed 516 passes, 147 more than Manchester United. Chelsea also registered 20 attempts on goal, twice United’s total of 10.

The victory provided evidence of Chelsea’s ability to respond to tactical instructions and improve their performance during a match. For Alonso, the result was particularly encouraging because his players showed greater composure after the interval and took advantage of their opportunities.

His comments also highlighted the importance of possession and defensive stability in his approach, with the manager keen to see Chelsea control matches more consistently as the season continues.
