Cristiano Ronaldo vs Lionel Messi: The Race To 1,000 Goals, Explained

According to a report by leadership on Sunday October 18, 2026, Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi are approaching a historic milestone that no player has officially reached in top level football: 1,000 career goals. Ronaldo currently has 981 goals, while Messi has scored 936, leaving the two legends with different challenges as they approach the landmark.

Ronaldo needs just 19 more goals to reach 1,000, while Messi requires another 64. With a difference of 45 goals between them, Ronaldo remains the clear favourite to reach the milestone first.

At 41, Ronaldo continues to lead Al Nassr’s attack in Saudi Arabia. He has scored four goals in seven Saudi Pro League appearances this season, following a campaign in which he recorded 30 goals in 37 matches across all competitions. With domestic league and AFC Champions League Elite fixtures ahead, he will have several opportunities to increase his tally.

Messi, meanwhile, is enjoying an impressive year at Inter Miami. The 39 year old has reportedly scored 38 goals in 41 appearances for club and country in 2026, including 25 goals in MLS this season. His current form suggests he could continue adding to his total as Inter Miami pursue further success.

Ronaldo’s biggest advantage is his 45-goal lead. His experience, positioning and finishing ability have helped him remain productive despite his age. A recent brace against Al Diriyah reportedly took him to 981 career goals.

Messi faces a more difficult challenge because of the distance between their totals. However, his scoring form means he could still make significant progress if he maintains his current level over the coming seasons.

Reaching 1,000 goals would represent a remarkable achievement for either player. Both have already surpassed the career totals of many legendary forwards, although historical goal records remain disputed because of differences in how some older matches are counted.

For Ronaldo, the milestone would add another achievement to an extraordinary career. Messi, who has won the World Cup and eight Ballon d’Or awards, would further strengthen his legacy by reaching the same figure.

Based on their current totals, Ronaldo is expected to become the first to reach 1,000 official career goals. Messi could follow if he continues playing and scoring at a high level.

The race is now entering a decisive stage, with Ronaldo needing 19 goals and Messi requiring 64. While Ronaldo has the advantage, both players will continue to attract attention as they pursue one of football’s most remarkable milestones.
