Ghana's senior national football team, the Black Stars, have earned continental recognition after being nominated for the Men's National Team of the Year award at the 2026 Confederation of African Football (CAF) Awards.
The four-time African champions are among 10 national teams shortlisted for the prestigious award, following their impressive performances on the international stage during the year under review.
Ghana will face competition from Algeria, Cabo Verde, Côte d’Ivoire, the Democratic Republic of Congo, Egypt, Morocco, Senegal, South Africa and Tunisia.
The nomination comes after the Black Stars' return to the knockout stage of the 2026 FIFA World Cup, marking a significant achievement for the national team.
Ghana began their World Cup campaign with a 1-0 victory over Panama before securing a goalless draw against England. Although they suffered a 2-1 defeat to Croatia in their final group match, the Black Stars advanced to the Round of 32 as one of the best third-placed teams.
Their campaign eventually ended following a narrow 1-0 defeat to Colombia in the knockout stage.
The achievement marked Ghana's return to the World Cup knockout rounds for the first time since the 2010 tournament in South Africa, when the team reached the quarter-finals.
The nomination offers another opportunity for Ghana to receive recognition for its contribution to African football, particularly after a period of rebuilding for the senior national team.
The 2026 CAF Awards ceremony is scheduled to take place on December 7 in Lagos, Nigeria, where outstanding players, coaches, clubs and national teams across the continent will be honoured.
The Black Stars will be hoping to translate their nomination into a continental award.
