Man Utd handed injury boost ahead of Chelsea Premier League clash

Manchester United have been handed a significant injury boost ahead of their Premier League clash with Chelsea after midfielder Kobbie Mainoo returned to full first-team training, according to a Metro report published on Wednesday, October 28, 2026.

The England international has been unavailable for United’s previous four matches because of a thigh injury, but his return to training raises the possibility that he could feature in Saturday’s lunchtime meeting with Chelsea at Stamford Bridge.

Mainoo’s potential availability comes at an important moment for manager Michael Carrick, who is under increasing pressure to improve the team’s results after a difficult start to the campaign. Having another option in midfield could help United address their recent problems and provide greater flexibility ahead of a challenging away fixture.

United travel to west London following a disappointing 3-0 defeat to Bournemouth at Old Trafford last weekend. That result extended their winless streak to eight matches across all competitions and left them sitting 16th in the Premier League standings.

The club’s poor form has intensified questions about Carrick’s future, although reports indicate that he is expected to remain in charge for the encounter against Chelsea. Another underwhelming display, however, could increase scrutiny of his position as United attempt to recover from their recent setbacks.

Mainoo’s return offers Carrick an additional midfield option as he prepares to face Xabi Alonso’s Chelsea side. The young midfielder’s availability could prove valuable as United look to regain control in the middle of the pitch and produce a more convincing performance than they managed against Bournemouth.

Nevertheless, Mainoo is not the only player whose fitness is being monitored ahead of the weekend. Luke Shaw and Marcus Rashford were reportedly absent from first-team training, leaving uncertainty over whether either player will be ready for the trip to Stamford Bridge.

Benjamin Sesko and Patrick Dorgu also remain unavailable because of longer-term injury problems. Their continued absence could limit Carrick’s choices as he considers how best to organise his squad for a fixture that carries considerable importance for the struggling visitors.

Away from the injury situation, Carrick may also be considering changes to his starting line-up, particularly regarding captain Bruno Fernandes. The Portuguese midfielder was left out of the team for the Bournemouth defeat after United’s 4-1 loss to Como in the Champions League.

Fernandes had publicly questioned aspects of Carrick’s tactical approach following the European setback, leading to speculation about the relationship between the captain and the manager. His omission against Bournemouth added another talking point during an already difficult period for the club.

However, reports indicate that Carrick and Fernandes have since held private discussions. Those conversations could help clear the way for the midfielder to return to the starting eleven against Chelsea, although his selection remains uncertain.

Fernandes’ potential reinstatement, combined with Mainoo’s return to training, could give United a timely lift as they prepare for Saturday’s encounter. Carrick will hope the available players can help deliver a stronger performance and ease some of the pressure surrounding his position.

With several key players still doubtful or sidelined, United’s final team selection will depend on their fitness assessments in the days leading up to the match. The clash with Chelsea presents another opportunity for the team to halt its poor run and begin moving away from the lower reaches of the Premier League table.
