Chelsea could explore the possibility of signing another striker after their recent defeat raised questions about the strength of their attacking options, with Club Brugge forward Nicolas Tresoldi reportedly attracting interest from the Premier League side.
Manager Xabi Alonso faced an attacking selection problem ahead of Saturday’s match after Joao Pedro sustained a knee injury during training. Although Danny Welbeck was available for selection, Alonso opted to use Morgan Rogers as the central striker, a decision that failed to deliver the expected results.
The choice also prompted questions about the manager’s confidence in Welbeck as an alternative to Pedro. Meanwhile, Emmanuel Emegha is still waiting to make his Chelsea debut, leaving uncertainty over the club’s available options in the centre-forward position. These circumstances could encourage the Blues to assess potential additions during the transfer market.
Tresoldi has reportedly emerged as one player under consideration after Chelsea scouts watched him in action for Club Brugge. The 21-year-old German Under-21 international has enjoyed an impressive season, recording 12 goals in 14 appearances across all competitions.
His recent performances have included a hat-trick against Inter Milan and another three-goal display against Sint-Truiden. Club Brugge won that encounter 3-2, with Chelsea scouts reportedly present to assess the striker’s performance.
The forward has also received praise from former Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp, who described him as a world-class talent while discussing the uncertainty surrounding his international future.
Klopp cautioned against placing unnecessary pressure on Tresoldi over his decision about which senior national team to represent. He stressed that the striker should be allowed sufficient time to consider his options and make a choice that suits his career.
Although Tresoldi has represented Germany at Under-21 level on 27 occasions, he reportedly remains eligible to consider representing Italy or Argentina at senior international level. His eventual decision could become an important part of his future development, but his immediate performances at club level have already attracted attention.
Standing at six feet one inch, Tresoldi would offer Chelsea a different profile from Pedro. The Club Brugge attacker generally operates as a conventional centre-forward, using his physical strength to compete with defenders, retain possession and make forward runs behind opposing back lines.
Pedro, by comparison, can drop into deeper positions to participate in Chelsea’s build-up play. Tresoldi tends to remain closer to the opposition’s defensive line, focusing on attacking spaces and creating opportunities inside the penalty area. The report states that 92.3 per cent of his shots have come from inside the box, highlighting his preference for finishing chances from close range.
That approach could give Chelsea a useful alternative when they need a goal late in a match. His ability to occupy defenders and attack opportunities in the penalty area could also make him an effective option from the bench.
Pedro would likely remain Chelsea’s leading striker if the club pursued another forward. However, bringing in Tresoldi could increase competition for places, provide Alonso with greater tactical flexibility and strengthen the squad’s alternatives when the Brazilian is unavailable or needs a rest. No transfer agreement has been confirmed, and Chelsea’s reported interest remains at the monitoring stage.
