According to a report by Barca Universal on Thursday, October 22, 2026, Barcelona defender Andreas Christensen has been ruled out of Sunday's El Clasico against Real Madrid as he continues recovering from a left quadriceps injury that has kept him sidelined for more than a month.
The Danish centre-back sustained the injury during Barcelona's La Liga clash against Sevilla on September 19 and was initially expected to be out for four to six weeks. However, his recovery is now likely to take longer than anticipated.
According to SPORT, Barcelona are considering the possibility that Christensen could remain unavailable for around two months, although the club have yet to confirm an official return date.
The defender picked up the injury following a challenge during the match against Sevilla and appeared uncomfortable before being replaced by Gerard Martin. Subsequent medical examinations confirmed damage to his left quadriceps.
Barcelona initially declined to provide a specific recovery timeline, explaining that his return would depend on his progress during rehabilitation. His previous muscular problems have also encouraged the club to take a cautious approach.
Christensen has already missed four competitive matches, including La Liga encounters against Getafe and Real Betis, as well as Champions League fixtures against Galatasaray and Paris Saint-Germain.
His absence could extend beyond El Clasico, with Barcelona potentially without the experienced defender for their Champions League meeting with Aston Villa on November 3.
The Catalan side also face a difficult league trip to Atletico Madrid on November 8, and Christensen's involvement remains uncertain if his rehabilitation continues more slowly than expected.
Barcelona will then host Villarreal on November 22, following the international break, with that fixture potentially providing a more realistic opportunity for his return if the cautious recovery schedule continues.
Nevertheless, an earlier comeback has not been completely ruled out, as Barcelona continue to monitor his condition without setting a definite date for his return to competitive action.
Christensen's continued absence presents another concern for Barcelona as important domestic and European fixtures approach, particularly with other defensive options, including Eric Garcia and Jules Kounde, also unavailable.
The club are expected to prioritise the defender's full recovery rather than risk bringing him back prematurely, hoping to prevent another muscular injury from disrupting his season further.
