Barcelona have received encouragement in their pursuit of Alessandro Bastoni after the Inter Milan defender rejected the Italian club’s initial contract renewal offer, according to a report by Barca Universal on Tuesday, November 3, 2026. His response has created uncertainty over his future and could offer the Catalan club an opportunity.
The 27-year-old centre-back remains a significant target for sporting director Deco, who is monitoring developments surrounding his contract. Inter have reportedly submitted an opening proposal through Bastoni’s representatives, hoping to secure his long-term commitment. However, the defender’s camp considered the terms inadequate, leaving negotiations unresolved.
Bastoni is contracted to Inter until 2028, meaning the club have time to improve their offer. His existing deal also gives them a strong negotiating position if interested teams approach. Nevertheless, his rejection of the first proposal has added fresh uncertainty and renewed Barcelona’s hopes of signing him.
The Spanish side have maintained contact with Bastoni’s representatives despite failing to complete a transfer last summer. Barcelona were reportedly close to an agreement, with the defender prepared to sign a contract that would have kept him at the club until 2031. However, manager Hansi Flick eventually decided against proceeding, bringing the proposed move to a halt.
That setback has apparently not removed Barcelona from Bastoni’s thinking. His representatives are said to consider the club an attractive destination if he decides to leave Inter. The defender is also believed to want greater clarity about Barcelona’s sporting project before making a decision.
A direct discussion with Flick is reportedly important to Bastoni. He wants to understand how the manager would use him, which position he would occupy and how central he would be to the team’s long-term plans. The coach’s explanation could influence whether the Italian international considers moving to Spain.
Inter, meanwhile, are expected to demand a substantial fee if they become willing to sell. Reports suggest the club value Bastoni at approximately €70 million and would resist accepting less. Their financial demands could make negotiations difficult for Barcelona, who must consider the cost alongside other squad priorities.
Bastoni’s qualities explain the Catalans’ continued interest. His composure in possession, technical ability and contribution to build-up play make him suited to Flick’s approach. As a left-footed centre-back, he could also provide a valuable option in Barcelona’s defensive department, while his experience at Inter and international level would add quality.
Deco must now determine whether the financial commitment is realistic before renewing the pursuit. Bastoni’s rejection of Inter’s opening offer has reopened the possibility of a transfer, but does not mean an agreement is close. Barcelona would still need to establish the player’s willingness to move and negotiate a fee with Inter. The outcome may depend on the club’s next renewal proposal, Bastoni’s conversation with Flick and Barcelona’s readiness to meet the reported valuation. Any renewed approach would therefore require careful planning, particularly given Inter’s ability to retain him under his current contract. Barcelona must decide whether Bastoni represents the right investment for their defensive rebuild over coming seasons.
