Chelsea forward Cole Palmer has singled out Romeo Lavia for his impressive contribution in the Blues’ 2-0 Premier League victory over Manchester United at Stamford Bridge, according to a report by Metro on Saturday, October 31, 2026.
Morgan Rogers opened the scoring for Chelsea before Palmer converted a penalty to complete the victory. Manchester United also finished the match with 10 players after Lisandro Martinez received a red card following a VAR review of an incident involving Wesley Fofana, whom he struck with his forearm.
Despite the goals and dismissal attracting attention, Lavia’s performance in central midfield emerged as one of the major talking points. The Belgian partnered Moises Caicedo and helped Chelsea establish control in the middle of the pitch against Michael Carrick’s side.
Palmer was particularly impressed by his teammate’s display and suggested that the midfielder does not always receive the recognition his ability deserves. The England international described it as one of the finest performances he had seen from Lavia, adding that the Belgian had long been among his favourite players in that position.
He also acknowledged that persistent injuries had interrupted Lavia’s development and limited his opportunities to establish himself in the team. However, Palmer was pleased to see the midfielder gradually move beyond those setbacks and demonstrate the quality he possesses. He ultimately identified Lavia as the best performer on the pitch.
Lavia arrived at Chelsea from Southampton in 2023 for a reported £53 million but has endured a difficult spell because of recurring fitness problems. His appearances have been limited, with the 22-year-old making 53 outings for the club across three years. His latest performances, however, suggest that he is beginning to build greater confidence and consistency.
Chelsea manager Xabi Alonso also praised the midfielder, describing his contribution against United as an outstanding demonstration of midfield quality. The Spaniard highlighted Lavia’s ability to connect defensive and attacking play, change the direction of possession and make effective decisions under pressure. He added that the Belgian had been showing encouraging form over the preceding two or three weeks.
Palmer also discussed teenage winger Estevão, who made his first Premier League start of the season. The forward explained that he consciously tried to bring the Brazilian into the game whenever possible, recognising his eagerness to earn more regular opportunities.
Alonso similarly commended Estevão’s response after being omitted from the starting team during the Carabao Cup defeat to Liverpool. He said the 19-year-old had demonstrated through his attitude, determination and performance against United that he deserved further chances.
Chelsea’s victory provided a valuable boost, while the recognition received by Lavia highlighted his growing influence as Alonso continues shaping the team’s midfield options.
