Manchester United manager Michael Carrick has confirmed that Bruno Fernandes will remain the club’s captain despite growing pressure following the team’s disappointing results.
Carrick made the announcement ahead of Saturday’s Premier League meeting with Chelsea at Stamford Bridge, insisting that Fernandes remains committed to the club after discussions between the two.
The Portuguese midfielder was left on the bench during United’s 3–0 defeat to Bournemouth last Sunday. His omission followed public criticism of the team’s tactics after their 4–1 Champions League defeat against Como.
According to Reuters, Carrick said the disagreement had been resolved and confirmed that Fernandes would continue leading the team.
United’s Struggles Continue
Manchester United are going through a difficult period. Their defeat to Bournemouth extended their winless run to eight matches in all competitions.
The result left them 16th in the Premier League table with seven points from eight matches, just one point above the relegation zone.
The Premier League has also highlighted Fernandes’ importance to United. Since Carrick took charge in January, the midfielder has recorded 14 assists and created 96 chances, more than any other player in Europe’s five major leagues during that period.
Chelsea Clash Could Be Crucial
Saturday’s trip to Stamford Bridge presents another major challenge for Carrick.
Chelsea enter the match in fifth place, while United desperately need a positive result to stop their poor run.
There is also encouraging news for United supporters, as Kobbie Mainoo has returned to training and could be considered for the matchday squad. However, Benjamin Sesko remains unavailable with a shin injury.
Carrick now faces an important decision over whether to restore Fernandes to the starting line-up.
With pressure increasing and confidence needing to be rebuilt, the Chelsea encounter could prove significant for United’s season.
Will Bruno Fernandes lead Manchester United back to winning ways, or will Chelsea make their problems even worse?
