Manchester United 23-man training squad vs Como revealed with eight absent

Manchester United have confirmed a 23-man training group ahead of their UEFA Champions League meeting with Como, with several senior players missing from preparations as manager Michael Carrick assesses his available options.

According to a report by Manchester Evening News on Tuesday, October 20, 2026, Carrick supervised the team’s final training session at Carrington before the squad travelled to Italy for Wednesday’s European encounter. The session revealed several fitness concerns, with Marcus Rashford, Lisandro Martinez, Ayden Heaven, Kobbie Mainoo and Luke Shaw all absent.

Rashford missed training while managing a hip problem. Manchester United are monitoring the forward’s condition, and a late assessment is expected to determine whether he will be fit enough to join the travelling party.

Martinez was also unavailable after being withdrawn at half-time during United’s 1-1 draw with Leeds United last weekend because of a knock. Although the injury was not initially regarded as serious, his failure to participate in Tuesday’s session has cast doubt over his availability against Como.

Heaven’s absence was attributed to illness, which had also prevented the young defender from featuring against Leeds. Mainoo, meanwhile, continues his recovery from a minor injury that has already ruled him out of United’s recent matches against Atletico Madrid and Leeds.

Shaw remains another concern as he works his way back from an injury sustained earlier in the month, which has kept him out since the draw against Tottenham. The left-back has endured another interrupted spell this season after previously missing three matches before returning against Fulham on September 20.

United’s defensive problems could be compounded by Leny Yoro’s suspension following his red card against Atletico Madrid. Although the defender did not participate in Tuesday’s session, he is expected to return to full training.

Benjamin Sesko and Patrick Dorgu are also unavailable. Sesko is recovering from a shin injury, with Carrick admitting that the club cannot yet establish when the striker will return. Dorgu has been sidelined since suffering a suspected hamstring injury while representing Denmark against Wales in September.

Despite the growing list of absentees, United’s training group includes several young players who could receive opportunities against Como. The goalkeeping contingent comprises Senne Lammens, Karl Darlow, Tom Heaton and Mee, while the defensive group includes Harry Maguire, Matthijs de Ligt, Harry Amass, Dan Armer, Diogo Dalot, Jayden Kamason and Noussair Mazraoui.

Midfield options include Mason Mount, Tyler Fletcher, Jack Fletcher, Youri Tielemans, Carlos Baleba, Andrey Santos and Bruno Fernandes. Shea Lacey, Joshua Zirkzee, Bryan Mbeumo, Matheus Cunha and Amad Diallo complete the listed attacking options.

The presence of young defenders Amass, Armer and Kamason could become particularly important if United’s senior players fail to recover. Amass may be considered at left-back should Shaw remain unavailable.

United will travel to Como hoping to build on their opening Champions League victory over Sabah and respond positively to their defeat against Atletico Madrid. However, they face a competitive opponent in Cesc Fabregas’ side, who began their European campaign with a convincing 4-1 win over RB Leipzig before losing 3-2 away to Feyenoord.
