According to a report by BBC Sport on Sunday, November 1, 2026, Arsenal Women had to settle for a 1-1 draw against Aston Villa Women in a thrilling Women's Super League clash, with Alessia Russo netting a late equaliser to salvage a point for the Gunners.
Arsenal dominated large spells of the contest and carved out several chances, but they could not convert their superiority into goals. The visitors attacked with purpose from the outset, though Aston Villa goalkeeper Akane Okuma produced a string of crucial saves to keep Arsenal at bay.
Caitlin Foord went close to breaking the deadlock in the 11th minute, but her attempt was comfortably gathered by Okuma. Georgia Stanway and Taylor Hinds also sought a breakthrough as the visitors kept pressing.
Despite Arsenal's early dominance, Aston Villa took the lead in the 25th minute. Chasity Grant latched onto a fine pass from Lynn Wilms and drilled a right-footed strike into the bottom corner to put the hosts 1-0 up.
Arsenal sought a response before the interval but could not find an equaliser. Okuma made another vital stop to deny Stanway, while Kyra Cooney Cross squandered a promising opportunity by heading off target.
At the start of the second half, Arsenal made a double substitution, introducing Emily Fox and Lisa Baum for Taylor Hinds and Géraldine Reuteler. The changes injected fresh energy as the Gunners continued their pursuit of a way back into the match.
Aston Villa were pinned back for long stretches, their goalkeeper making further key saves to frustrate Lisa Baum and Kim Little. Arsenal finally broke through in the 85th minute via Alessia Russo.
Stina Blackstenius whipped a dangerous ball into the box, and Russo rose to meet it with a powerful header that beat the goalkeeper and nestled in the bottom corner, levelling the score at 1-1.
The Gunners were not content with a draw and pushed forward in the closing stages in search of all three points. Russo, Caitlin Foord and Ona Batlle each had opportunities to snatch a late winner, but Aston Villa weathered the pressure.
The final whistle confirmed a share of the spoils. Arsenal may feel frustrated after failing to turn their numerous chances into victory, while Aston Villa can take considerable confidence from a resolute display against a strong opponent.
