Kim Lars Allegedly Goes 13 Months Without Pay – Kurk Okraku Breaks Silence, Ghanaians React

The President of the Ghana Football Association (GFA), Kurt Simeon-Okraku, has broken his silence on the unpaid wages of Kim Lars Björkegren, the Coach of the Black Queens and current acting Coach of the Black Stars, revealing that the Swedish tactician has not been paid for 13 months.

According to a report by TV3 Ghana on November 4, 2026, the GFA President made the disclosure while speaking on the state of affairs concerning the national teams. The statement has since sparked widespread discussion, particularly because Björkegren currently carries the heavy responsibility of leading both the women's and men's senior national sides.

The revelation is significant given the coach's expanded duties. Having been appointed to steer the Black Queens, he was later handed the acting role with the Black Stars, a position that places him under intense public scrutiny and high expectations. Many followers of Ghanaian football have therefore questioned how a coach can be expected to deliver results without receiving his salary for more than a year.

Reactions on social media have been largely critical. A number of Ghanaians have questioned the purpose of the disclosure, noting that Mr. Okraku, as head of the football governing body, is the very person responsible for ensuring that technical staff are paid. Others wondered who exactly the statement was directed at and what action he expected from the public.

Some commentators suggested the matter could point to deeper financial challenges within the Association, while a section of football enthusiasts speculated about whether funds meant for the coach's salary had been made available. There were also humorous reactions, with some users making light of the situation while expressing concern about the image of Ghana football.

Beyond the social media conversation, the situation raises broader questions about accountability, financial management and the welfare of coaches and players in the country's football system. Stakeholders are expected to demand clarity on when the outstanding salaries will be settled.
