Guinness World Records Reacts As Ronaldo Retires From Portugal Team

Guinness World Records has paid tribute to Cristiano Ronaldo following his announcement that he is retiring from international football, bringing a 23-year career with Portugal to an end. According to a report by The Punch on Thursday, November 5, 2026, the organisation recognised the 41-year-old forward’s achievements, including his records for the most appearances and goals in men’s international football.

In a message published on its official X account on Thursday, Guinness World Records highlighted that Ronaldo is leaving the international stage with 234 caps and 146 goals for Portugal. Those figures place him at the top of the all-time rankings for appearances and goals in the men’s game, reflecting his consistency and influence across more than two decades.

Ronaldo confirmed his decision in a video shared on social media. He explained that he believed the time had come to hand Portugal’s number seven shirt to a younger generation of players. The forward described representing his country in the iconic jersey for over 23 years as a privilege, while acknowledging that the shirt never belonged to him.

He said he had been honoured to carry the responsibility that came with wearing it. Ronaldo also admitted that reaching the decision had been difficult, noting that major choices in life can involve both emotional considerations and rational thinking.

Since making his international debut in August 2003, Ronaldo has become the central figure of Portugal’s football history. He eventually took over the captaincy and helped the national side secure its first international trophy at the 2016 European Championship. His contribution to the country’s success continued with victories in the UEFA Nations League in 2019 and 2025.

His retirement announcement follows weeks of uncertainty surrounding his international future, including reports of tension involving Portugal coach Jorge Jesus. Speculation intensified in September when reports claimed the Al-Nassr forward had left the national team’s training camp following a disagreement with members of the coaching staff. There were also suggestions that disciplinary action could follow after he was overlooked for a starting position.

Ronaldo later addressed the rumours in an October statement, rejecting claims that he intended to retire from international football. At the time, he insisted he remained committed to Portugal and would continue representing the country whenever he was fit and available.

His decision brings that commitment to a close. Ronaldo made his debut on September 24 in Portugal’s 1-0 Nations League victory over Wales, beginning a journey that would make him the country’s most decorated and influential player.

Meanwhile, reports indicate that Portugal are considering a farewell ceremony to recognise his contribution to the national team. Such a tribute would mark the end of an era for the forward, whose records of 234 appearances and 146 goals underline the scale of his service.

Although Ronaldo will no longer represent Portugal on the pitch, his achievements across 23 years have secured a lasting place in the nation’s football history. His retirement leaves the national side preparing for life without its captain and goalscorer.
