LaLiga’s refereeing authorities reportedly believe there is insufficient visual evidence to determine the exact nature of the contact between Real Madrid midfielder Arda Guler and Sevilla player Peque during their recent encounter. The incident occurred in the first half, before either side had opened the scoring.
Sevilla reportedly argued that Guler deserved a red card for an alleged elbow during the confrontation. However, the available footage has not provided clear enough evidence to justify further disciplinary action against the Turkish international.
According to the report, 23 camera angles were used to cover the match. Despite the extensive coverage, none captured the incident closely enough to establish precisely what happened. The available recordings included wider shots from behind the players, the Skycam and the camera generally used for offside decisions.
These angles failed to establish whether Guler made contact with Peque using his elbow, shoulder or hand, leaving officials unable to reach a definitive conclusion about the incident.
The report stressed that the problem was not caused by a television broadcasting failure. The footage available to viewers was the same material accessible to the Video Assistant Referee team, meaning officials had no additional recordings that could clarify the disputed moment.
The Technical Committee of Referees has explained that cameras positioned inside stadiums do not always capture incidents in a way that supports VAR decisions. This is particularly challenging when confrontations occur away from the ball, as camera operators typically focus on the main action.
In Guler’s case, the incident reportedly took place behind the referee, while the available camera angles offered no decisive evidence.
Consequently, the authorities reportedly see no grounds for retrospective punishment. With the referee neither awarding a penalty nor dismissing Guler during the match, stronger visual proof would be necessary for further intervention.
The midfielder is therefore expected to escape additional sanctions despite Sevilla’s objections following their 4-1 defeat to Real Madrid.
