2026 FIFA U-17 WWC: How the tallest player of the competition Ijirigho helped Nigeria beat Mexico

According to a report by Premium Times on Friday, October 30, 2026, Jane Ijirigho, the tallest player at the ongoing 2026 FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup, played a decisive role in Nigeria’s 2-1 victory over Mexico, helping the Flamingos book their place in the quarter-finals in Morocco.

The 1.92-metre-tall goalkeeper delivered an impressive performance, making several important saves to frustrate Mexico’s attacking players and protect Nigeria’s lead during their Round of 16 encounter.

Ijirigho produced her first major save just six minutes into the match when Mexico captain Citlalli Reyes threatened to give her team an early advantage. Reyes, who had already scored twice during the group stage, found an opportunity to shoot from inside the penalty area.

However, the Nigerian goalkeeper reacted brilliantly, diving low to prevent the effort from finding the back of the net.

She was called into action again later in the match, producing another outstanding save to push Kemberly Garcia’s powerful long-range attempt onto the crossbar.

Her contributions proved crucial as Nigeria maintained their advantage and secured qualification despite Mexico's late efforts to stage a comeback.

Flamingos head coach Akeem Busari praised the goalkeeper for her impressive displays throughout the competition, describing her performances as exceptional.

"She's awesome," Busari said.

"She has been fantastic in every tournament. She has a great mentality, and she really wants to do her bit, and she's enjoying doing her best for Nigeria."

Nigerian defender Azeezat Oduntan also expressed her admiration for Ijirigho following the final whistle, applauding the goalkeeper for her outstanding contribution to the victory.

"She was fantastic," Oduntan said while blowing a kiss towards Ijirigho. "I love her!"

Meanwhile, Ijirigho expressed her delight at making the important saves but credited her teammates for their collective performance and determination.

"I was very happy to make the save," she told FIFA.

"The team did very well, honestly, I'm very proud of them. We came out with a great team spirit, and we know we have the quality."
