According to a report by Metro on Wednesday October 21, 2026, Eddie Howe has become the leading candidate to replace Michael Carrick as Manchester United manager following the club’s disappointing 4-1 Champions League defeat to Como.
Carrick is under increasing pressure after United suffered another setback in Italy on Wednesday night. Cesc Fabregas’ Como side delivered an impressive performance, scoring four goals before Joshua Zirkzee netted a late consolation for the visitors.
Nico Paz scored twice, while Tasos Douvikas and Jacobo Ramon also got on the scoresheet to secure a comfortable victory for the Italian club.
The defeat followed United’s 1-1 draw against Leeds United, a result Carrick had believed offered some positive signs. However, the loss to Como has raised further questions about his future, with the report stating that United have managed only two wins in their first 11 matches across all competitions in the 2026/27 season.
Although the club’s hierarchy had appeared prepared to give Carrick more time, another poor performance could increase pressure on the former midfielder and force United to consider a change in management.
According to bookmakers Betfair, former Newcastle United manager Howe is currently the favourite to take charge if Manchester United decide to dismiss Carrick.
The 48 year old has been without a club since leaving Newcastle in July. During his five years at St James’ Park, Howe guided the Magpies to Champions League qualification and helped them win the Carabao Cup.
Former Chelsea and Napoli manager Antonio Conte and Brighton boss Fabian Hurzeler are also among the leading candidates, with both listed at 5/1. Julian Nagelsmann follows at 7/1, while Kieran McKenna is priced at 8/1. Como manager Fabregas is another possible option at 11/1.
Meanwhile, former England midfielder Joe Cole has defended Carrick, arguing that Manchester United’s difficulties cannot be blamed solely on the manager.
Speaking on TNT Sports, Cole described the defeat as humbling and pointed to the club’s long-standing structural problems and concerns about the quality of some players.
United captain Bruno Fernandes also criticised the team’s slow start against Como, stressing the need for greater bravery, confidence and composure when playing in possession.
