Elmina Sharks have pledged to continue paying goalkeeper William John Donkoh for the remaining two years of his contract after he lost his left leg following a motor accident in Cape Coast.
Speaking to Channel One Sports, the club’s Public Relations Officer, Kingsley Smith Arthur, described the incident as a major blow to the club but assured that management remained committed to supporting the player through his recovery.
“William’s issue comes as a surprise and a huge blow to the club. It is hard to take as a club and as a club, regardless of how hard it is, we are committed and supporting William to recover fully from that devastating accident he encountered on Tuesday,” he said.
Arthur explained that the club’s decision to continue paying Donkoh’s salary was in fulfilment of the two-year contract he signed at the beginning of the season.
The goalkeeper had featured in just two matches for the club since joining during the recent transfer window.
“As a club, we are committed to the contract as first asset. The leadership of the club has resoluted that we will commit to paying the salaries of William for the contract, which is two years. We just got William signed just this window,” Arthur stated.
He added that the club would continue to provide support to help Donkoh rebuild his life following the accident.
“We will still try and support in any way we could as a club to help reshape and rebuild William to the very best possible he needs to get to,” he said.
The commitment means Elmina Sharks intend to honour Donkoh’s contract despite the devastating injury, as the goalkeeper faces a difficult period of recovery and adjustment.
