The Vancouver Canucks have recalled a newly acquired forward. The Canucks announced they recalled forward Jacob Quillan from the AHL’s Abbotsford Canucks. In a corresponding roster move, Vancouver placed forward Filip Chytil on the injured reserve with an upper-body injury.
Vancouver acquired Quillan (along with Brandon Buhr) from the Toronto Maple Leafs a few weeks ago for Aatu Räty. Quillan, 24, won a National Championship at Quinnipiac University before signing with the Maple Leafs as an undrafted free agent.
The Dartmouth, NS, native quickly became a strong secondary scorer for the Toronto Marlies of the AHL. In his first two professional campaigns, Quillan registered 32 goals and 73 points in 107 games with a +19 rating. In last year’s Calder Cup playoffs, Quillan scored three goals and nine points in 19 games, helping the Marlies win the championship.
Quillan also debuted with the Maple Leafs during that stretch. Still, his NHL appearances were mostly disappointing, tallying one goal and three points in 24 games with a -5 rating, and averaging 10:04 of ice time per game. He’s off to a red-hot start with Abbotsford, scoring five goals and seven points in five games with a +8 rating since the trade.
Meanwhile, the oft-injured Chytil heads back to the injured reserve. The former 21st overall pick began the year on the injured reserve with a shoulder ailment. In the Canucks’ recent contest against the San Jose Sharks, Chytil took a hard hit along the boards from Sharks defenseman Darnell Nurse. Chytil will be eligible to return next Thursday when Vancouver faces the Winnipeg Jets. He tallied two assists in seven games between injuries.
