Lamine Yamal takes Mbappé’s Champions League under-20 scoring record as Barça beat Villa 3-0
Camp Nou stands with 'Més que un club' spelled in yellow seats above the pitch

Lamine Yamal became the Champions League's top scorer before the age of 20 as Barcelona beat Aston Villa 3-0, taking the mark from Kylian Mbappé. The record comes soon after Mbappé's double decided the Clásico, and the win lifts Barça to second in the league phase.

Lamine Yamal has taken a Champions League scoring record from Kylian Mbappé. He opened the scoring in Barcelona’s win over Aston Villa at Spotify Camp Nou on 3 November. A Villa mistake in the seventh minute gave him the chance. Yamal curled the ball past goalkeeper Zion Suzuki. That goal was his 14th in the competition. No player has scored more before turning 20. Mbappé had managed 13 at that age. The Real Madrid forward now has 72 Champions League goals in total.

The timing gives the record an edge. Mbappé scored in the 41st and 87th minutes as Real Madrid won the season’s first Clásico 2-1 at Spotify Camp Nou on 25 October. Raphinha’s 61st-minute goal was Barcelona’s only reply that night.

Yamal still has until July to extend the mark

Yamal needed 37 Champions League appearances to reach his total. He does not turn 20 until next July. The record could therefore grow further this season. The two forwards had been level at an earlier stage, each with 10 Champions League goals before their 19th birthdays, according to FC Barcelona.

Raphinha did the rest against Villa. He made it 2-0 in the 52nd minute and struck again 12 minutes later. His double moved him alongside Ronaldinho in Barça’s scoring list. It also lifted his tally for the season to 19 goals in 13 games. The club’s match report named him MVP. Goalkeeper Joan García was picked out as the standout player of the first half.

Clean win lifts Barcelona to second behind PSG

The result matters for the table as much as the record books. Barcelona came into the game after a 4-2 defeat to PSG. A clean sheet and three goals restored some calm.

The win also ended Villa’s perfect start. The English side had won all three of their earlier league-phase games. This was their first Champions League defeat of the season. Aston Villa said it was their first meeting with Barcelona since their two-legged Super Cup win in January 1983.

Barcelona now sit second. Only PSG, with four wins from four, are above them. Villa have the same points total but trail on goal difference. The league phase runs until 27 January 2027.

Attention now turns to LaLiga. Barcelona visit second-placed Atlético Madrid at the Metropolitano on 8 November in a matchday-12 fixture kicking off at 9pm CET. The international break follows. Barcelona then return at home to Villarreal on 22 November.
