Raphinha is enjoying a sensational run in front of goal. The Brazilian winger continued his scoring streak against Aston Villa, taking center stage on a memorable Champions League night. His two goals in Barcelona’s 3-0 victory confirmed that he is in outstanding scoring form and helped him climb the club’s all-time Champions League scoring rankings. He has now recorded braces in back-to-back games and scored in three consecutive appearances.

Two-year extension

His success on the field is also about to be matched by a major development off it. Raphinha has agreed to extend his contract with Barcelona through 2030. Sporting director Deco announced the agreement at the club’s General Assembly last September, and the official signing ceremony alongside president Joan Laporta is scheduled for Thursday.

The Barcelona captain played a decisive role in putting the game beyond Aston Villa’s reach. He scored his second goal after receiving an excellent pass from Fermín López, then completed his brace by finishing off an impressive individual move from João Cancelo.

The two goals brought Raphinha’s Champions League tally for Barcelona to 23, matching Robert Lewandowski’s total and making him the club’s third-highest scorer in the competition’s history. Only Lionel Messi, with 120 goals in 149 appearances, and Luis Suárez, with 25 goals in 55 games, rank ahead of him.

Raphinha has also drawn level with Ronaldinho, reaching 94 goals in all competitions while wearing the Barcelona shirt.

Plaudits from team mates and the boss

His influence has not gone unnoticed inside the locker room. Fermín López, who provided the assist for Raphinha’s opening goal against Aston Villa, praised the Brazilian’s importance to the team and also highlighted Lamine Yamal.

“They’re incredible for us and help us so much. They make the difference and are extremely important to the team. With players like them, we’re sure we can achieve great things,” Fermín said.

Barcelona manager Hansi Flick has also been full of praise for Raphinha. The Brazilian is one of his favorite players and a central figure in his project at the club.

“He’s in a great moment. He’s an incredible player,” Flick said.

Raphinha’s numbers this season tell the story of his impact: 19 goals in 13 competitive appearances. It’s an extraordinary return that shows just how effectively he has rediscovered his best form after the injury problems that disrupted his previous campaign.

Playing in a new role as a center forward, the Brazilian has demonstrated an outstanding ability to find space in the penalty area and an instinctive eye for goal. But his contribution goes well beyond scoring. He continues to press relentlessly, make intelligent runs behind opposing defenses and bring an intensity to every match that sets the tone for Barcelona’s attack.

With a contract extension through 2030 on the horizon and his scoring numbers reaching new heights, Raphinha is making an increasingly compelling case as one of the most important players in Barcelona’s present and future.
