President John Mahama has urged the Confederation of African Football (CAF) to award Ethiopia the hosting rights for the 2028 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON), citing the country’s long absence from hosting the continental showpiece.
Mahama made the appeal after touring Bahir Dar Stadium alongside other African leaders, where he assessed the facility and expressed confidence in its potential to host major international football competitions.
Describing the stadium as impressive, the Ghanaian President said Ethiopia deserved an opportunity to stage the tournament, considering the length of time since it last hosted the AFCON.
“This is a very impressive stadium. Ethiopia haven’t hosted the AFCON in a very long time. It is only fair for them to be given the opportunity,” Mahama said.
His comments highlight the importance of giving countries across the continent opportunities to host major football events and showcase their sporting infrastructure, organisational capacity and passion for the game.
For Ethiopia, securing the hosting rights would provide an opportunity to welcome Africa’s leading national teams and supporters while placing the country at the centre of continental football.
Mahama’s appeal now adds to the discussion surrounding the selection of the host nation for the 2028 AFCON, with CAF expected to make the final decision.
