Flamingos Beat Mexico to Reach 2026 FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup Quarter-finals

Nigeria’s Flamingos have reached the quarter-finals of the 2026 FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup after beating Mexico 2-1 in their Round of 16 clash in Salé, Morocco, on Thursday.

Goals from Oluebube Umejiaku and Mary Akpan Dunstan sent Nigeria into the last eight, but a late strike from Mexico exposed a weakness the team must address before their next match.

Umejiaku broke the deadlock in the 40th minute, giving the Flamingos a 1-0 lead at half-time after Nigeria had pressed for an opening goal.

The Nigerian girls continued to push after the restart and extended their advantage through Dunstan in the 71st minute, putting them in a strong position to secure qualification.

Mexico, however, refused to give up. Emily Delgado scored deep into stoppage time, in the 100th minute, to leave Nigeria facing a tense finish before the Flamingos held on to claim victory.

The result sends Nigeria into a quarter-final meeting with Venezuela on Sunday, November 1, with a place in the semi-finals at stake. Venezuela booked its own quarter-final ticket with a 1-0 victory over Germany.

Late scare offers warning

Although the victory keeps Nigeria’s title hopes alive, Mexico’s late goal is a reminder that the Flamingos cannot afford to relax before the final whistle.

Having built a two-goal lead, Nigeria appeared to have the match under control. But Delgado’s strike brought Mexico back into the contest and put the Nigerian side under pressure in the closing moments.

That lapse could prove costly against stronger opposition if the Flamingos fail to manage games more carefully. Their attacking quality has helped them progress, but protecting a lead will be just as important as finding the net as the tournament enters its decisive stage.

The Flamingos have already shown they can recover from disappointment. After opening their campaign with a 2-1 defeat to Poland, they responded with a 2-0 win over Puerto Rico before producing a notable 3-1 victory over defending champions Korea DPR to advance from the group stage.

Their win over Mexico extends that recovery and puts them within reach of the semi-finals. A victory over Venezuela would take Nigeria a step closer to improving on their third-place finish at the 2022 edition and pursuing a first title in the competition.

Meanwhile, the Nigeria Football Federation’s Acting General Secretary, Dr Emmanuel Ikpeme, and the Senior Special Assistant to the President on Grassroots Sports Development, Adeyinka Anthony Adeboye, were pictured with the team after the victory.

With Venezuela next, the Flamingos must build on their attacking confidence while ensuring that a late lapse does not turn another promising performance into an unnecessarily difficult finish.
