Black Maidens coach Joe Nana Adarkwa says he is proud of his players despite his side’s elimination from the ongoing FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup.
Ghana’s campaign came to an end on Sunday after a 1-0 defeat by Japan in the quarter-finals at the Mohammed VI Football Complex in Rabat.
The Black Maidens had battled their way into the last eight following a difficult start to the tournament but were unable to overcome the Asian side.
After a goalless first half, Japan broke the deadlock in the 54th minute through Nanami Kurita, who capitalised on a rebound after Yuka Kishida’s effort fell into her path inside the penalty area.
The goal proved decisive as Japan held on to secure victory and end Ghana’s hopes of reaching the semi-finals.
Despite the disappointment, Nana Adarkwa believes his players gave their best and has praised their determination throughout the competition.
The Ghana coach says the team will return home, work harder and look forward to another opportunity on the global stage.
“We did our best, but we’re happy at the end of the journey,” Nana Adarkwa told FIFA Media.
“We didn’t give up. We’re proud of ourselves, and I’m proud of that. We go back home, work harder, and see what happens.
“We’ll be here next year,” he added.
Meanwhile, Japan will face fellow Asian side South Korea in the semi-finals as they continue their quest for the tournament title.
