Paris Saint-Germain host Olympique Lyonnais at the Parc des Princes on Sunday as Ligue 1’s top two meet on 14 points at the end of the eighth round.
Lyon lead the table on goal difference after beating Nice 2-1 last weekend, while the defending champions moved into second place with a 3-1 victory over Strasbourg.
Luis Enrique’s side have won seven matches in succession in all competitions and are challenging strongly for another Ligue 1 title, as well as continuing their defence of the Champions League. Their recent run has included 4-2 victories over Manchester City and FC Barcelona.
The win against FC Barcelona came at a cost, however, with several important PSG players suffering injuries. Khvicha Kvaratskhelia is expected to miss the rest of the season with a cruciate ligament injury, while Ousmane Dembele and Marquinhos face several weeks out with thigh problems.
Nuno Mendes is unavailable while recovering from a muscular issue, and Alessandro Longoni is doubtful after taking a knock.
PSG have scored 14 goals in three Champions League matches this season, the joint-highest total in the competition over that period alongside Arsenal in 2010-11. They have also been particularly effective at home, winning their last three competitive matches in the capital by an aggregate score of 13-3 since a 2-1 defeat by Monaco in early September.
Their 14 Ligue 1 goals are the second-highest total in the division after seven matches, with half coming from set pieces.
Desire Doue has scored in each of his last three competitive appearances. He, Dembele and Illia Zabarnyi scored against Strasbourg, while Lucas Hernandez, Vitinha and Fabian Ruiz joined Doue on the scoresheet against FC Barcelona this week.
Lyon also remain unbeaten at the top of the domestic standings after a strong performance against Nice. Paulo Fonseca’s team have collected four Ligue 1 points from losing positions this season, all at home.
Their league form contrasts with a difficult European night, though, as Hoffenheim beat them 3-0 in the Europa League on Thursday. Lyon have conceded six goals in that competition’s league phase, one more than they have allowed in Ligue 1 after seven rounds.
The visitors have kept clean sheets in two of their three league away matches this season. They are also seeking to avoid consecutive Ligue 1 away defeats, something that has not happened since February-March last season. A victory would give Lyon successive league wins away to PSG for the first time this century.
Lyon could be without Mohamed Ouedraogo and Nicolas Tagliafico, who missed the Europa League match with knee problems. Keito Nakamura is suspended after his red card against Nice. Pavel Sulc and Tanner Tessmann scored within minutes of each other last weekend to overturn Elye Wahi’s opener.
Probable teams
Paris Saint-Germain: Safonov; Zaire-Emery, Zabarnyi, Beraldo, Digne; Fernandez, Vitinha, Ruiz; Akliouche, Torres, Doue.
Lyon: Descamps; Athekame, Mata, Niakhate, Abner; Morton, Tessmann; Nuamah, Nartey, Tolisso; Sulc.
Paris Saint-Germain’s squad depth could help them cope with their absences and secure another home victory.
