Keith Hackett rates Enzo Fernandez dive as nine out of ten

Former Professional Game Match Officials Limited (PGMOL) head Keith Hackett criticized Enzo Fernandez for diving during Manchester City’s away defeat to Aston Villa, awarding the incident a “nine out of ten” simulation score.

Keith Hackett Rates Enzo Fernandez Simulation at Villa Park

Former referees chief Keith Hackett criticized Enzo Fernandez for a theatrical fall during Manchester City’s Premier League match against Aston Villa at Villa Park, maintaining that referee Peter Banks was correct to wave away the penalty appeals. The fixture saw Unai Emery’s side secure victory behind a brace from Nicolas Jackson and a single goal from Erling Haaland for Manchester City.

Examining the footage of Fernandez going down under a challenge, Hackett stated that the contact lacked any real force to cause the player’s reaction. According to Football Insider, Hackett remarked that the shove featured an outstretched arm without the bending and straightening motion required to generate genuine power, prompting his sarcastic assessment that the referee likely told the midfielder the tumble was a “nine out of ten” dive and nothing more.

Referee Peter Banks Evaluated on Three Penalty Appeals

Beyond the incident involving Fernandez, Hackett evaluated three separate penalty appeals turned down by referee Peter Banks during the match. The former FIFA referee indicated that the official handled the penalty box decisions correctly, including a challenge involving John Manzambi against Elliot Anderson and another featuring Iliman Ndiaye and Ian Maatsen.

While supporting those penalty non-calls, Hackett highlighted that Banks showed a readiness to issue yellow cards elsewhere in the match. Marc Guehi received a first-half booking following a challenge on Nicolas Jackson that appeared fair before being substituted at halftime, and Matty Cash was cautioned in the 55th minute for an accidental challenge on Jeremy Doku, a disciplinary action viewed by observers as overly strict.
