Vincent Kompany, head coach of Bayern Munich, has been taken to hospital after collapsing while watching a training session involving the club’s reserve team on Friday, October 23.

The 40-year-old Belgian was observing the second team’s session when the incident occurred at Bayern’s training ground. He is undergoing medical examinations as the German champions await further information about his condition.

Bayern Munich confirmed the incident in an official statement. “Vincent Kompany required medical attention after collapsing during an FC Bayern reserve team training session on Friday.”

The club added that Kompany was undergoing thorough examinations in hospital and would remain under medical care, with his coaching staff assuming responsibility for training and match activities until further notice.

The incident comes after Kompany experienced a viral illness that affected his involvement in the team’s activities in recent days. He missed training earlier in the week and was absent from the pre-match press conference ahead of Bayern’s UEFA Champions League clash with Arsenal.

Assistant coach Aaron Danks represented him at the media briefing, explaining that the Belgian had been advised to rest. Kompany, however, returned to the touchline for Wednesday’s 2-2 draw against Arsenal.

His latest collapse has raised fresh concerns about his health, although Bayern have not confirmed whether the incident is directly connected to his recent illness.

Bayern Prioritise Kompany’s Recovery

The club has made clear that his recovery will take precedence over footballing commitments, with sporting board member Max Eberl expressing Bayern’s support and assuring him of the time required to recover.

“Vincent Kompany’s health is our top priority. We at FC Bayern will do everything we can to ensure he makes a speedy recovery.”

Eberl added that the manager was receiving the necessary medical attention and support, with no pressure to return before he was ready. “Vinnie is receiving all the necessary medical care and support, and all the time he needs.”

The Bayern official also expressed confidence in the coaching staff to manage the team during Kompany’s absence, assuring supporters that the club’s immediate footballing responsibilities would be handled by his assistants.

Bayern are scheduled to face Freiburg in the Bundesliga on Sunday, October 25. Kompany’s availability for the fixture remains uncertain as he continues to undergo medical examinations. The club has not announced a timeline for his return.

Kompany’s Journey to Bayern Success

Kompany has been Bayern’s head coach since July 2024, arriving from Burnley after guiding the English club to the Championship title and promotion to the Premier League in the 2022/23 season.

His coaching career began at Anderlecht in Belgium in 2019, initially as player-manager before he retired from professional football in 2020 to concentrate on coaching.

He subsequently moved to Burnley in 2022, where his attacking approach helped the club secure promotion, although they were relegated from the Premier League after one season.

His appointment at Bayern attracted considerable attention because of his limited experience at the highest level of European club management. However, he quickly silenced doubts by leading the German giants to the Bundesliga title in his first season, reclaiming the championship from Bayer Leverkusen in 2024/25.

Kompany added the Franz Beckenbauer Supercup to his honours with Bayern in 2025, and his impact earned him a contract extension until June 2029.

Having established himself among Europe’s leading coaches, the former Manchester City captain now faces a period of uncertainty over his health. Bayern’s immediate priority remains ensuring he receives the necessary care while his coaching staff oversee the team’s preparations.
