Reigning World Rugby Player of the Year Malcolm Marx has officially confirmed his next club after announcing his departure from Japan.
The 32-year-old Springboks hooker will leave Kubota Spears at the end of the 2026-27 Japan Rugby League One season to join the Bulls.
Marx had been linked with several South African clubs in recent months, with the Sharks initially emerging as potential suitors as they prepare for the departure of Bongi Mbonambi.
However, the Bulls have now secured his signature, reuniting him with head coach Johan Ackermann, who originally signed and developed the hooker during their time together at the Lions.
The double World Cup winner's departure from Kubota Spears was announced by the Japanese club last week, with the Bulls now confirming his return to South Africa.
Marx will follow former Shizuoka Blue Revs captain Kwagga Smith in making the move from Japan Rugby League One to the Pretoria-based club.
“I am incredibly grateful for the opportunity to join such a historic and respected club as the Bulls next season,” said Marx in a statement.
“It is an exciting new chapter for me, and I look forward to reconnecting and working alongside former teammates and coaches.
“I am eager to contribute wherever I can, bring and play my part in helping the Bulls achieve their goals and ambitions.
“I look forward to the journey ahead and to being part of this special club.”
The signing represents another major statement of intent from the Bulls, who have strengthened their squad with two significant Springboks additions in recent weeks.
The Pretoria outfit currently sit second in the United Rugby Championship standings and have reached four of the last five finals.
However, they have lost all four, leaving them still searching for their first URC title.
Marx's arrival could provide the missing piece as the Bulls look to finally get over the line and end their wait for silverware.
The hooker will not join the squad until next season, but his signing already represents a major boost to their title ambitions.
