Liverpool were beaten for the second time in four days on Wednesday after throwing away a lead against Fenerbahce in the final 20 minutes.
Goals from Trey Nyoni and Alexander Isak had the Reds on course for an important three points in the Champions League, but some shocking defending and some poor goalkeeping from Alisson Becker succumbed them to another damaging loss.
It was a huge win for former Liverpool attacker Dirk Kuyt, in charge of Fenerbahce, but a chastening one for his old team, and easily the worst night of Andoni Iraola’s reign so far. Here’s how we rated the players on what ended up as a fairly abysmal night for the Reds.
Alisson Becker: 3 – Alisson was not happy with Jeremy Jacquet for the opening goal, but he was not good enough for the other two, especially the final goal, where he cannot be allowing the ball to hang in the air for so long.
Joe Gomez: 6 – This was another good outing at right-back for Gomez, who delivered a couple of sumptuous balls into the box which probably deserved better. Excellent in possession and solid at the back, we should be seeing more of the 29-year-old on this evidence.
Jeremy Jacquet: 3 – Easily Jacquet’s worst performance in a Liverpool shirt as he looked a little in need of a rest. At fault as he turned his back on the first goal, but is so poor for the third. Cannot be beaten in the air so easily.
Virgil van Dijk: 4 – If Jacquet was awful, Van Dijk was marginally better, but it is becoming tiring seeing the captain wander through matches so casually.
Kostas Tsimikas: 3 – Tsimikas has been dreadful recently and this was no better. Put Alisson in trouble early in the game with a poor back pass and continually made Ngumoha’s brilliant work redundant by failing to get on his wavelength.
Alexis Mac Allister: 4 – Easily better than Szoboszlai and was better on the ball than many of his teammates, but still not at the level we’ve seen him at for most of the season.
Trey Nyoni: 8 (Man of the Match) – Nyoni’s was Liverpool’s best player by a distance here and deserved his goal. Great on the ball, confident in the tackle and clinical when his chance came. Should be a shoo-in to start on Sunday.
Dominik Szoboszlai: 3 – Some have been calling for the Hungarian to start in a more advanced role instead on Florian Wirtz, but they will be quieter after this performance. Poor on the ball, but worse off it, allowing Archie Brown to ghost in behind him to score for 2-2.
Victor Munoz: 6 – Worked hard and, along with Rio Ngumoha, looked like Liverpool’s biggest threat. Could have made better decisions with the final ball at times, but forced Fenerbahce defenders into last-ditch tackles more than once.
Bradley Barcola: 4 – Really poor to the point of being non-existent through the middle, and his night didn’t get much better either on the left or the right. Did go close with a good header and tested Ederson at his near post, but Liverpool need so much more from the £123m man.
Rio Ngumoha: 7 – Ngumoha looked on it right from the very start in Istanbul, jinking past defenders going right and then left as he tried to force an opening. Final ball could sometimes have been released quicker, but he had the defenders petrified, and it was a real surprise to see him taken off with 25 minutes left to play.
Alexander Isak: 6 – Came on and scored within minutes to finally net his first Champions League goal for Liverpool. Can’t ask for more than that.
Florian Wirtz: N/A – Came on and did nothing at all.
Cody Gakpo: 5 – Has made a habit of setting up Isak and did so again, making a clever underlapping run before planting perfectly onto the Swede’s head. No excuses for the equaliser really, has to be getting more on the header, and inadvertently took it out of Alisson’s hands and onto Brown’s foot.
Milos Kerkez: N/A – Liverpool chasing a goal and Kerkez comes on. Shocking.
Lewis Koumas: N/A – All hope of getting a point went with Koumas’ entry onto the pitch.
